Nexus 9 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Update Arrived

This morning Google finally announced The highly anticipated Nexus 9 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update is now available on Twitter and Google+, the first major update for the tablet in over 5 months. Google’s tablet was the only Nexus not in 5.1, but now it’s finally here.

Earlier this week, a Nexus 9 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update arrived as an over-the-air update, leaving millions of owners frustrated. Most devices got 5.0.2 in November, and even the 2012 Nexus 7 is already on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, but Google’s latest flagship tablet was getting it now.

This week, news broke that the Nexus 9 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update is in its final testing stages and could arrive soon, and now it’s finally here. Starting today, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop is coming to Nexus 9. Read on for more details.

This device was the only one that didn’t receive the Android 5.0.2 or Android 5.1 Lollipop updates like the others, but now it’s finally catching up with the others. It was released in November and has released a day one update to Android 5.0.1, to fix some bugs, but this is the last update it has ever received. All the while, every other Nexus device released in the last few years has received at least two Lollipop updates.

On Twitter, Google confirmed that Android 5.1 Lollipop is on the way, but for those wondering, it will actually be Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Something Google has uncovered on their own page Google+ announcement. It’s very rare for Google to announce updates for a single device, so this could be a move to keep all those frustrated owners happy after rolling out 5.0.2 a few days ago.

However, Google could unroll the Nexus 9 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update to fix a few bugs and prepare the device for the main software update, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, which aims to fix all the bugs. Features from 5.1 and solving many of the performance issues and issues plaguing the Nexus 9. That seems to be the case because now just a few days later Android 5.1.1 is here and rolling out now.

Those with Nexus 9 can expect a small 23.3MB update to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop to arrive any time soon, and it shouldn’t take long to complete. Then it should come after a larger update that goes all the way back to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Google has stated that the update will start arriving today, but that doesn’t mean all owners will see it this afternoon.

Typically updates are slow and gradual and often take a few days to about two weeks to reach all smartphone or tablet owners. That means if your Nexus 9 doesn’t update to Android 5.1.1 today or even tomorrow, be patient as it will come soon.

We can also expect Google to release factory images of Android 5.1.1 for the Nexus 9 in the near future. When this happens, owners can flash the factory image instead of waiting for the over-the-air update by following these steps.
