LG G4 Android 5.1.1 Update Rumors Make a Surprise Return

The new LG G4 smartphone is one of the best Android devices available right now, but we’re hearing some bad news about future updates. It has a big and bright 5.5-inch 2k display, stunning genuine leather building materials, the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop and arguably the best camera on any smartphone.

While the G4 version has been successful with the device available from all carriers worldwide and in the US, it still has its share of problems. We’ve been hearing horror stories about the touchscreen that was reportedly fixed with a recent update, and now we’re hearing that it won’t see the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update.

Last month we saw multiple Android 5.1.1 Lollipop updates coming for popular Samsung, Motorola and now HTC devices, but a new rumor suggests that LG won’t be delivering Google’s latest software full of bug fixes to the G4. Read on for what we know so far.

As mentioned above, an update for the LG G4 started rolling out last week and another update is coming. i press the device today in the United States. A minor update to the Verizon LG G4 fixes a few bugs, improves the advanced search feature and a few other things. However, the device is still stuck on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

In March, Google released Android 5.1 in hopes of fixing multiple minor issues in the initial version of Lollipop. Then, in April, Android 5.1.1 was released for Nexus devices with even more fixes and to mitigate the dreaded memory leak issue many users faced. Since then we’ve seen most manufacturers switch gears and start working on Android 5.1.1 updates, but that doesn’t appear on the LG G3 or even the newer LG G4 boards.

A new report Detailed comments from both the O2 in the UK and LG Hellas, which indicate that the new LG G4 will not see the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update. The first Android 5.1 will remain in software release, and the next major update will be Android M later this year, possibly November.

Considering that the LG G4 runs one of the latest versions, Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, that’s not too bad news, but it could pose a few issues for owners. The memory leak issue has been fixed in Android 5.1.1, not to mention a few new features and security patches, and battery life improvements in Lollipop.

If LG decides not to update the LG G3 or LG G4 to Android 5.1.1 and instead waits for Android M later this year, owners will be stuck with a somewhat unstable software for the next 5-6 months. Something nobody wants to hear. However, this only comes from smaller regions outside of the United States, and an update may still be coming.

It’s worth noting that the LG G Flex 2 in the United States has received the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update, which means the company is at least working on new software, so it’s quite possible that major markets like the United States will see Android 5.1. While .1 Lollipop won’t happen in smaller spaces.

All said and done, LG G3 and LG G4 will be updated to Android M at launch. Google introduced Android M in May, and if it follows the same annual release cycle as the last few years, Android M should be released in October or November. If LG aims to go straight to the M, they’ll have plenty of time to focus on Google’s latest software, and they’ll be one of the first manufacturers to release updates when they arrive.
