Today, one of the most influential internet companies in history has split in two. Alphabet is the new parent company under which Google will be placed. Moments ago Larry Page, former co-founder and CEO of Google, with President Sergey Brin announced a brand new company and division of Google Inc. A few things to know for those interested.
Over the years, Google has continued to grow and grow, transforming into the powerful giant company we all know and love today. While they offer everything from Google Search, Gmail, Chrome Browser, Android and many smaller projects, it’s hard to keep track of everything they do these days. But it all changed.
Via the official Google Blog and on social media, this afternoon Larry Page confirmed He and Sergey Brin split Google and started a brand new company called Alphabet. It’s all a little confusing, and below are a few more details about what’s going on, the future of Google, Android, and more.
First of all, Google is still here and the new CEO is former Android and Google Chrome leader Sundar Pichai. Someone who has done great things for the company over the years and was highly praised by Larry Page this afternoon. It’s all a bit confusing and was announced a few minutes ago.
Alphabet
Alphabet It is the brand new parent company of Google and all other Google-type companies operating today under one big roof. Google will now split up with a few other small businesses, startups, projects and more gathered under one roof as Google, allowing each to focus on their own needs and focus on what really matters.
Much of what Google has done in the recent past has been very extreme. Things in the healthcare industry, Google Glass as a prime example, and many other small projects. All of these will now be under Alphabet like Google. But this allows Google and Android to (hopefully) work together with a cleaner and more focused vision forward.
In a blog post published a few minutes ago, Larry spoke to Google Ventures, YouTube, Google Life Sciences, calicoand things like Google X Labs (which brought us Google Glass) and more will be part of Alphabet instead of Google. Here is a small excerpt from the announcement.
“What is the alphabet? The alphabet is mostly a collection of companies. The biggest of these is, of course, Google. This newer Google has been somewhat weakened by the inclusion of companies in the Alphabet that are quite far from our main Internet products. What do we mean by far? Good examples are our healthcare efforts: Life Sciences (works on glucose-sensing contact lens) and calico (focused on longevity). Basically, we believe this gives us more scale of management as we can independently run things that are not so relevant. Alphabet”
Basically what all this means is that Google is starting to swell a bit. So many different projects going in hundreds of different directions, Google as a whole is huge or needless to say some are “strong”.
As a result, they are now all divided. Google is a big piece and company going under the big Alphabet umbrella.
As we said above, everything is still very confusing as this news has just come in. There was absolutely no mention of Google’s core outside of search, and no mention of Chrome and more importantly Android. However, most likely Android will continue to operate under Google and Sundar Pichai, which will put a lot more focus on Google and Android itself. Instead of diving into very different fields.
Former Google co-founders and CEOs Larry Page and Sergey Brin are now head of Alphabet, causing Google to need a CEO. The new head of Google is Sundar Pichai, who has been doing amazing things with Android since he took over.
It looks like Google, as a new company, will continue to take care of everything it currently does. Internet, ads, Android, Chrome etc. This move essentially allows projects that are more “out of the way” to stay out of the way and keep the important things in focus, mature and improve the lives of people around the world.
Android and More
As we mentioned above, Android was never mentioned in today’s announcement. This might be a little scary, but Google and Sundar will most likely keep the lead. However, Larry specifically mentioned that every small company under Alphabet will have its own CEO as it continues to move forward. But that means Google and Android are getting more and more of the attention they need lately, rather than trying to gather everything under one big company. That should lead to better Google, better Android, and better companies everywhere under Alphabet.
The big question though is will this allow Android to get faster software updates?
Every company under the Alphabet umbrella will have its own team and CEO, and in Google’s case it’s Sundar. All small companies will also have new strong and talented CEOs, which will likely have more announcements over the next week.
In closing, all this means is that Alphabet is basically the new Google. It’s essentially a giant company that runs the internet world. Google is still only one of the new companies of Google, Larry and Sergey. This will also allow Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two of Google’s original founders, to focus on more extreme projects. Things like Google Glass, Drone delivery efforts, Wing, and many other crazy adventures and projects from Project X Labs. Expect more details and announcements to arrive shortly.
