Nexus Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Update: What to Expect?

Last week, the Android VP confirmed that an update with the main focus on brand new emoji characters and other changes is headed to Nexus users. This morning, multiple sources Have approved it will indeed be Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and here is what Nexus smartphone and tablet owners need to know.

On October 5, Google released Android 6.0 Marshmallow alongside the brand new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P smartphones. Now in about two months the first minor maintenance update is here, it will be available later today and for the entire week.

The Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update looks pretty minor, aiming to provide a few minor changes for tablets, possibly some security improvements, performance improvements, but most of all it replaces emoji characters. That’s what we know so far, and we’ll confirm more when updates come in.

With the release of iOS 9.1 in October, Apple delivered over 150 new emoji characters for iPhone owners. Allowing users to express themselves with the keyboard in ways never before. Emoji keyboards are getting more and more popular, and Google quickly said they’ll be adding more to Android, too. Like the popular taco emoji, multiple different finger and hand gestures, tons of food, additional faces and more.

The release of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow seems to be mostly for that, but other changes are included, so we’re seeing a version upgrade to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Stock Android will have over 200 new emoji characters built in, and other manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Motorola, and more will also need to update to Android 6.0.1. The navigation bar on Android tablets has been changed. With 6.0.1, the back, home and multi-action buttons located at the bottom center of the screen will now be split and point towards the edges. So users can easily go back or home to the bottom left corner of the screen with their thumbs and the square multitasking button will be at the bottom right. Making tablets easier to use than before and similar to the old Android tablets from a few years ago.

There are additional changes to the Do Not Disturb controls as well. Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow will also have the latest security patches for December. There may be other changes, battery or performance improvements and more, but we can’t be sure until the update arrives. We may also see fixes for recent reports of incorrect RGB colors in Marshmallow.

Android 6.0.1 Release Date

The Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update will begin rolling out to new Nexus devices today, and for others, it will continue all week, according to Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google’s VP of Android, and several posts to Twitter. This means that most users should have it before the weekend or at the very latest early next week.

We don’t know which devices will get it first, but it will likely be the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. This will be a small over-the-air software update that will appear automatically. Users can also check settings > about phone (or tablet) > check for updates and manually install software once it’s released for your specific device.

Which Devices Will Get Android 6.0.1

No official announcement has been made yet, but most likely all new Nexus smartphones and tablets on Android 6.0 will receive the new 6.0.1 update. These are Nexus 5, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 and Google’s Nexus Player.

Google has not yet officially announced Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with all the changes or released factory images, but we expect it to be released later today. Users can manually update when they arrive, wait for software updates, and get the latest software directly from Google.

As for other devices from popular manufacturers, the wait will continue. Most users in the United States with Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note 5, LG G4, Moto X and more are still waiting for Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and now that wait may be even longer. The good news is that the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update looks pretty minor, so manufacturers can add the changes and release the update as soon as possible.
