Android: Microsoft Edge has already been downloaded 5 million times

On Windows PCs, as Microsoft Edge pre-installed on Windows 10 struggles to surpass its 5% market share, will Internet Explorer’s successor experience a renaissance on Android and iOS? Since its introduction on the Google Play Store, Microsoft Edge has already been downloaded 5 million times. The global stock of Android smartphones (2.3 billion active smartphones) is still a drop of water on its scale, but it still shows strong interest over time: the browser had already been downloaded 1 million times a month after its launch on Android. in October 2017.

Microsoft Edge is a hit on Android

The numbers were reinforced by a lot of positive feedback from users. At the time of writing, the app has been rated 4 out of 5 stars by nearly 23,000 users. For comparison, Chrome has just over 4 stars out of 5, but this rating is based on almost 10 million user feedback. Also, Chrome has been downloaded over a billion times. As such, Microsoft still has a little way to go before Google really flounders.

The Microsoft browser, among other things, allows you to enjoy a better continuity between PC and smartphone. For example, you can easily open a web page opened in Edge for Android in an Edge for Windows 10. The browser seems to be quite popular on iOS as well as Android: although not number one, it is the 9th most downloaded in the app category.

Despite its formidable breakthrough on PC, Edge’s success on smartphones confirms Microsoft’s new strategy, which now relies heavily on development on platforms other than Windows 10. Since the abandonment of Windows Phone, Microsoft has launched a new launcher and ported many non-Edge apps. Like Microsoft Office suite, Office Lens, OneDrive, Microsoft Teams, Yammer and Delve.

We’ll see if Edge can gain significant market share on mobile alongside Chrome (63.63%) and Safari (27.29%). Because despite 5 million downloads, you still have to look for Microsoft’s scanner market share (0.14%) under an electron microscope.
