In mid-October, LG rolled out the first Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for the popular LG G4 and is now slowly starting to hit US carriers. The update came first to Sprint, then to US Cellular with tons of new features and improved performance, but the update is also causing issues for many. We’ll go into more detail below.
On October 5, Google officially released Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the successor to Android 5.1 Lollipop. Loaded with new features, better performance, improved battery life and more. Less than a month later, LG became the first major manufacturer to release an update for small regions, and now it’s in the US.
In mid-December, the Sprint LG G4 Android 6.0 Marshmallow update was officially announced along with a minor update. change log, but most users still haven’t received the update. It arrived for US Cellular in January as well, and others like AT&T and Verizon are next. However, some users may want to delay it.
Now that the update has hit two major carriers in the United States, we’re starting to see an influx of reports that the update has done more harm than good, not to mention several LG G3 owners. Frustrating millions of LG G4 users, especially at Sprint.
He was the first to receive the update, which may have been rushed as we saw reboot issues, WiFi issues, no internet access, devices not getting past the Android loading splash screen, and more. This is a big problem and we saw something similar in the LG G3 update to Android 4.4 KitKat that caused a lot of problems.
various titles Android forums It looks like the Sprint LG G4 Android 6.0 update was released slowly, maybe even delayed, then kept coming, but only causing problems for many owners. Lots of issues that also popped up for the US Cellular update.
While we’ve had good luck with Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the Nexus 5, Nexus 6P, and other devices, LG G4 users are reporting a number of major issues. Some of these were available on Nexus devices, and some were not. The possibility of problems with every update is real, but most users should be able to continue without any issues.
However, those who own the Sprint LG G4 getting Android 6.0 see the device rebooting followed by a phone that never works. Contacts disappeared, internet in and out and for some not even working and a whole bunch of other issues. This seems like a big issue and users can expect an update with more fixes in the near future.
The link above is a detailed guide full of many issues users are experiencing and potential fixes for some of them. Contact sync issue seems to be the biggest issue so we recommend all users to go to settings > accounts > main Google account and make sure contact sync is enabled. before Update. Then turn it off and then on again after the update; this should make the phone sync and restore all contacts.
Also other issues where the phone worked fine for the first few days then rebooted and got stuck at the boot (loading) screen with the Android or Sprint logo and wouldn’t work any more. If this is happening, a full factory data reset may be necessary. If users are unable to boot into the phone, try booting into recovery and deleting everything. Of course this means you have to start fresh, but this is something I do with every major update because it’s the best way to start for a good experience.
A last resort before going to a Sprint (or other carrier store) for a replacement is to boot into recovery mode and do a factory data reset, then clear the cache to delete any remnants of the old software and update. Here’s how:
Turn off LG G4. Then press and hold power and volume UP while powered off. When the boot screen comes up, keep holding it. When the LG logo appears, release the power for a second and then press and hold it again. This should reboot the phone into “recovery mode” where users can use volume up/down to navigate. Go to Wipe Cache and use the power to select it. Try that first and reboot. If that doesn’t fix the problem, follow the same steps and perform a “factory data reset” during recovery.
If all else fails, some users may need to go to a Sprint store for a replacement. We’ve reached out to LG for comment and will provide you with feedback as we learn more.
