According to Juniper Research, global smartwatch sales in the past 12 months would have been around 17.1 million units. Despite only being released at the end of April 2015, the Apple Watch alone would hold more than half of those sales, or 8.8 million watches to be exact.
- Apple Watch: Everything you need to know about Apple’s connected watch
By making a small calculation, we understand that it only takes 9 months.apple watch taking the lead, which in many ways is a real achievement. In less than a year, these shares of the connected watch market would already be around 52% (the brand refuses to give exact figures).
And to say that these estimates will be even below the expectations of the firm. According to several analysts, sales of Apple smartwatches are likely double by 2017. If that were to happen, the Californian firm would certainly find itself in a monopoly situation.
Still, it’s not the competition that’s missing. We especially think of Motorola with its Moto 360, Sony with its Smart Watch 3 and even Samsung (Gear S2) and Gravel (gravel time). To this list we can also add traditional watchmakers such as Tag Heuer or Fossil that have emerged in the connected watch market.
Still, according to the analytics firm’s results, the Apple Watch will top the sales, while the biggest flop will come from watches under Android Wear, which only got a 10% cumulative score of sales. They are criticized for being named under very eclectic operating systems.
However, besides these surprising scores, many continue to question the proven usefulness of these connected devices. For example, on its platform, Apple has only planned 10,000 apps for its watch, while more than a million apps are planned for the iPhone. As for Android Wear, it only has 4,000 apps. Moreover, these objects, which must be worn every day, do not yet show a convincing autonomy apart from Pebble Time.
