England were supposed to defend 170 but kept losing wickets until the only ones left were the number 9 hitters Charlie Dean and Freya Davis. They needed 50 runs to win, and Dean was playing as if he could help his team win until Deepti Sharma tricked him into closing the victory at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
The Indians were asked to strike first, Smriti Mandhana’s 50 and Deepti’s 68 did not come out, helping India scatter 169. Except for Mandhana, Deepti and Pooja Vastrakar (22), the others failed to reach double-digit scores.
The situation in England was the same. Renuka Singh broke England’s back and swam four wickets, while the great Jhulan Goswami playing the last game of his career claimed two wickets.
Dean played 80 balls and scored 47 points in five fours, until he got to 45th place.
