Nepal team captain Sandeep Lamichhane was accused of raping a 17-year-old girl. Police investigation is ongoing and Kathmandu District Court has issued an arrest warrant for him. Also, Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) suspended him from the team to facilitate the investigation.
A 17-year-old girl filed a complaint against Lamichhani at the Gaushala Police Department on Tuesday. Lamichhane allegedly took her to places in Bhaktapur and Kathmandu and raped her in a hotel in Kathmandu on August 21, one day before Nepal’s visit to Kenya.
In a phone call with CAN officials, Lamichhane said he was innocent. He also said that he will return to Nepal after the league.
Lamichhane declared that he was innocent from his social media accounts.
“I have full faith in MASUSUM & Nepal’s respectable laws. I decided to take permission from CPL and return to my country in a few days. I am ready to face all these baseless claims. May the justice of the innocent and correct investigation be carried out against everyone who participated. I hope the law treats everyone equally,” wrote Lamichhane.

Sandeep Lamichhane is the only Nepalese playing leagues all over the world.
Lamichhane currently plays in the West Indies. Caribbean Premier League (CPL) represents the Tallawahs of Jamaica. However, he has not appeared in any of the three games played by the team so far. He will now leave the tournament. He made his debut in the Indian Premier League for the Delhi Capitals in 2018. He is the only one playing in T20 leagues around the world including Ausralia’s Big Bash League in Nepal, Lanka Premier League.
He made his international debut in May 2018. He replaced Gyanendra Malla as the captain of Nepal in 2021 and was also the second fastest man to 50 ODI goals.
