Shazam finally recognizes audio from Android apps, even on headphones

A new feature for Android users is coming to Shazam! Pop-up Shazam – that’s the name – when enabled, it allows you to detect any music track playing in any app on your smartphone. Thus, you can find out which song is playing from the 1st minute of a YouTube video or which song is playing in the Radio Nova app without opening the second one. Pop-up Shazam works even while wearing headphones – listening takes place on the smartphone’s audio bus and no longer necessarily depends on listening from the device’s built-in microphones.

Concretely, a persistent notification is displayed; Just tap to start the recognition of the song. This feature has been requested by users for years: Until now, you had to resort to a trick to recognize music in one of your apps. For example, try unplugging the headset from the audio jack of the smartphone, let the song play through the speakers and open Shazam or try to bring a headset close to the microphone. Two options that are far from perfect, impractical and produce random results.

There are still two big surprises in this announcement: First, the feature came out a year after Shazam was acquired by Apple for about $400 million. The announcement of this takeover initially raised fears that Shazam would find itself somewhat constrained to support the Apple ecosystem. Which is clearly not the case here. Because another surprise is that this feature is currently only available on Android smartphones. And it doesn’t look ready to come to iPhones, at least in this form: persistent notifications aren’t actually something that current versions of iOS allow…
