Google accepts $60 million fine for illegally collecting location data

According to the Australian Associated Press, Google agreed to pay a fine 60 million dollars to end a long legal battle against the Australian Commission responsible for competition and consumer protection. presented as “fair and reasonable” agreement for both parties was submitted to the Federal Court of Justice on Friday, August 12, 2022 and accepted by the judge.

In April 2021, the same Federal Court ruled that Google was guilty of violating Australian consumer laws by collecting location data from Android users without their explicit consent and causing them to believe that information was not flushed.

The decision was welcomed by the Australian regulator, who believes it sends a clear message to the tech giants about the need to comply with consumer protection laws, and specifically those regarding the collection and use of their personal data.

Google is penalized for confusing Android users. When set as location history “disabled”but to monitor web and app activity “Active”then Google collected location data when these services were used.
