Novak Djokovic talks about his war-torn childhood and how it shaped his character: “We had bombs flying above us, we kept playing tennis”

Novak Djokovic is one of the greatest players in tennis history, but like many of his contemporaries, he did not have a regular childhood. Djokovic was born in 1987 and a few years later the Yugoslav war broke out. The war continued from 1991 to 1999, and most of Novak’s childhood was spent in war-affected Serbia. He talked about his childhood experiences and how these challenges made him the person he is today.

Djokovic talked about the hardship the war brought to the country and how his choice to play tennis affected his parents. Novak talked about his early life experiences in an interview. BBC and RTS. said: “We had two wars, embargoes were imposed, we were under sanctions. We stood in line to buy milk and bread. I chose to play the most expensive sport that many do not have (laughs). My family had to endure many hardships so that I could pursue my dreams.”

Novak Djokovic had to learn to take care of himself at a young age.

Djokovic also talked about the maturity that he had to quickly instill in himself because of the war. said: “Like other tennis players of my generation, I couldn’t go to many tournaments. I had to grow up very quickly because I often went to competitions without a father and without a family. From a young age, I started to trust only myself. It helped shape my character from a young age.”

“I was 12 years old in the late ’90s when bombs were flying overhead. The bombardment lasted 2.5 months. Within a week, we started ignoring the rockets flying overhead, and we kept playing tennis all day because we didn’t have class at school.” Djokovic talked about the situations in his childhood.

Novak believes it’s important to go through challenges as it shapes a person’s character. said: “I don’t look at the past with anger or resentment. I do not remember him with such feelings. I am grateful to have had this experience and can appreciate more of everything I have. It shaped my character in many ways.”
