Flipkart Billion Catch+ Review

If you want to buy a budget device with good performance, chances are good that you are an ideal Indian consumer and surrounded by brands like Mi, Honor, Motorola and Lenovo. The brands mentioned have captured the market so well that it’s really hard for any new brand like InFocus to break into the mid-range segment. Flipkart thinks it has finally cracked the code. The e-commerce giant is ready to launch its first smartphones. Billion Catch+. The device brings with it many familiar experiences and tries to perfect them in the best possible way. And with its competitive price, the device actually offers much more than you might expect. So if you’re someone looking for their next midrange device, read on as we bring you our in-depth review of Billion Capture+:

Before we move on to the review part, let’s set aside the technical specifications. The device comes with some pretty good hardware, which you can check out below:

what’s in the box

Billion Capture+ has a simple and convenient packaging. The sliding box packaging adds a nice touch and the in-box compartment spaces were more than adequate. The box has pretty much everything you’d expect from a device at this price point:

Design and Build Quality

Flipkart has played it very safe when it comes to designing their products. Capture+ is very similar to its competitors, namely Redmi Note 4 and Honor 7X. On the back, you’ll find the dual camera setup accompanied by a dual-tone flash. It is then followed by the fingerprint sensor in the middle and finally there is some branding on the bottom half of the device. There is a 3.5mm jack on the top of the device and a USB Type-C port on the bottom. Both the volume buttons and the power button are well placed on the right side of the device while the left side houses the hybrid SIM tray.

The phone has a milled aluminum back with plastic on the top and bottom bezels.. The device doesn’t feel cheap by any means. In fact, it has one of the more solid builds, at least in its price segment. The edges of the device are curved and provide a pleasant grip accompanied by aluminum borders. However, the back is a fingerprint magnet, despite its premium looks. Yes, I agree that things are not as bad with a glass back, but still the matte finish of the device attracts a lot of fingerprints. Still, has one of the best building propertiesIt is based on a design that has proven successful in this price segment.

Capture+ has a 5.5 inch Full HD (1920*1080) LCD screen with 401 PPI. The screen looks absolutely beautiful thanks to the rich pixel quality. For the price point, Capture+ actually has a great display, this is spread quite evenly across its frame.

The brightness levels of the device are good. Although you may not be completely satisfied with outdoor use, the brightness settings will suffice in most cases. During my time with the device, I still found a problem. Turning on Adaptive Brightness will cause the device to wake up unusually. The device wakes up to a dimmed screen and then automatically switches to normal brightness settings. Is it an issue with the sensor or the screen, something I’m not so sure about. Other than that, the device’s display works quite well. Also comes with Ambient display feature, this will make the device wake up when a new notification arrives. In my use, I found it to be a very useful feature.

user interface

Capture+ Comes with stock Android experience, with absolutely no modifications made to it. The device comes with some pre-installed apps which include Flipkart, Myntra, PhonePe, SonyLIV and Microsoft’s Office Apps. While these apps do not affect the performance of the phones, the user has no option to uninstall any of them. It doesn’t matter though, because most of them are apps that people use a lot in India.

Except for these few apps, everything is kept simple as it is. The device ships with Android 7.1.2 and things are kept pretty simple. The fingerprint sensor on this device works relatively well and is much faster than those found on Honor devices. That said, I would love to have some gestures with the device, given that it’s located on the back.

Capture+ has the stock Pixel Launcher. If you’re a stock Android user, Capture+ shouldn’t feel any different. Capture+ is just one of those devices that offers a working user interface. and it should be good enough for most users.

Yield

If you’re looking at the mid-range price segment, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 is by far the most preferred SoC. And rightly so, the same is used in Capture+. The SoC works as expected and provides fast all-around performance. Octa Core processor coupled with good Adreno 506 GPU works well and apps and games work just fine.

While the device cannot handle heavy games like Asphalt 8 or Mortal Kombat, it can run games like Shadow Fight 2 relatively well. Apps opened almost instantly, with virtually zero lag. The 3/4GB RAM that comes with the device competes directly with many flagship devices on the market and proves to be more than enough for smooth multitasking. App optimization is great and even Android’s split screen mode looks great on the device.

While I’m not a huge fan of benchmarks, there are people who really like to trust them. Well, Capture+ performs reasonably well in most benchmarks out there. I ran Antutu and Geekbench on the device and the scores were good enough. In fact, the scores were better than the Redmi Note 4 and Lenovo K8 Plus, and comparable to the higher-priced Mi A1.

However, I would suggest that the general consumer should not rely so heavily on benchmarks, as no user would push the device to these limits in real life use. In terms of real-world performance, Capture+ is by no means disappointing.

cameras

The latest trend of dual cameras followed Capture+. It has a dual 13MP + 13MP primary setup consisting of an RGB sensor combined with a monochrome sensor. The cameras are working well, and it’s great to see Flipkart go the dual-camera route, as Capture+ brings a decent dual-camera setup to the masses. Here are some photos we took:

Normal camera mode manages to click smooth images. Low-light shots are also good and on par with their competitors. There is also a “Super Night” mode.captures images at a slower shutter speed and higher ISO to provide well-lit images. It works fine.

Portrait mode is here and it works pretty well to give you those fancy bokeh shots. Take a look at some of the portrait shots we took:

On the other hand, the front camera works properly. The 8MP sensor is as good as it can get in this price range. Images are very clear and bright. Autofocus is nice and there is an additional Selfie Flash to make the face look brighter, which basically makes the whole screen white and bright.

Also, both camera modes have a Pro mode that lets you manually adjust the ISO and Exposure. As a result, the camera on the device works fine.

connection

When it comes to connectivity, Capture+ has a Dual SIM hybrid slot. You can use two 4G SIMs or replace the secondary SIM with a micro SD card. Capture+ supports expandable storage up to 128GBwhich is pretty good.

But what sets this device apart from its competitors is, the inclusion of a USB Type-C port. While Type-C is inevitably becoming the standard these days, it’s still rare for a mid-level gamer to own it.

battery life

Capture+ comes with a massive 3500 mAH battery. The device has never let me down during my trial period. It lasted more than a day and a half with moderate use. Including checking emails, communicating with my team on Quip, calling when I’m going to be home late, lots of Twitter and Instagram, and finally a little bit of 8 Ball Pool. Background app optimization works well, and I’ve never seen myself running around for a charger to refresh the device’s juice.

Oh, and on the second day when it had to charge my device, Thanks to the included QC 2.0 charger, the device quickly charged from 0 to 100% in about 100 minutes.

The most unique thing about this device is that it is supported by tronX. tronX, if you’re not familiar, is a product of Smartron, one of the biggest names in the IoT (Internet of Things) market. It allows the user to easily manage and control all the smart devices around him with the ease of his smartphone. Also, the tronX app included with Capture+ has its own Gallery App, which allows the user to back up their pictures and videos to Smartron’s online storage. While it remains to be seen how well tronX will be implemented in the current smart device products in the Indian market, it is definitely a step in the right direction, something I really admire as an IoT fan.

Billion Catch+: Nothing New

Billion Capture+ is Flipkart’s first venture into the smartphone business and I must say the device performs very well. While it doesn’t really bring anything new to the midrange’s current product lineup, it does improve a few things other companies haven’t really perfected. As someone who has used the Mi A1 before, I can easily say that I would prefer Capture+ more due to its extremely competitive pricing starting at Rs. 10,999 with the familiar stock Android experience

Billion Catch+ Review: Looks Can Be Deceiving

Capture+ is one of those devices you might want to skip thanks to its simple and straightforward look, but believe me, it’s one of the best devices to use in its price range. The build quality is great, the grip is solid, and the Snapdragon 625 works as expected. Flipkart has played pretty safe with Billion in producing a device that doesn’t bring anything new to the table but instead focuses on perfecting everything expected of an ideal mid-range. Except for an average camera, the device managed to check all the boxes.
