August Pixel Android 9 Pie Update: What You Need to Know

Google released a new Pixel Android 9 Pie update on August 5, 2019. important changes and fixes for Pixel 3a and the entire Pixel phone family. Here’s what owners need to know, what’s changed, and how to get the latest monthly update right now.

Google releases new software every month. increase security, improve performance, patch exploits or issues, and fix remaining issues. These updates are available for all Android devices and especially Pixel devices. You will want this update no matter what device you have.

Essentially, your Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL and Pixel 3a will get a new update this week with the latest Android Pie software and security patches.

Unfortunately the Pixel C tablet doesn’t seem to be supported anymore as this is the second month Google has removed it from its security update list.

August Android 9 Pie Update for Pixel Devices

Google releases the latest security updates on the first Monday of each month, which this month is Monday, August 5, 2019. Today, wait for an over-the-air update notification tomorrow, or you can manually check in settings.

Google has shared more information about the changes. Android security bulletinand device specific information Pixel security bulletin page. Overall, we see over 28 patches to help keep your Android device safe.

We’re only seeing 5 critical security patches this month, which is less than normal and a good sign, but then more than 20 “High” level concerns. It’s about the average, so don’t worry.

Additionally, we’re seeing some major fixes and changes for Pixel devices from the August Android Pie update. These are WiFi enhancements for Pixel devices. Unfortunately, we still don’t see a fix for ongoing camera issues on the smaller Pixel 3.

For the most part, Google fixed stability and connectivity this month, but that’s about it. We hope that the Android Q update, which will be officially released in August, will fix the ongoing problems in the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a family.

If you want to get this latest version of Android on your Pixel device now, you can download or flash it from the links below instead of waiting. However, we already see the update reaching most devices, so we recommend waiting for the OTA instead of manually downloading the files.

When Will I Get the Update?

Google does pretty well with these monthly updates. Recently, updates are starting to hit user devices as soon as they make an announcement online. As expected, my smaller Pixel 3 received the August release this morning. So, expect over-the-air update notification in an hour or two. If not, it most likely will. The waiting time is usually less than a day, although some people have to wait a few days.

If you don’t want to wait, you can go to get it right away. This will pull the update from Google servers to your phone. The whole process should take less than 10 minutes. From downloading to installing and restarting your Pixel on Android Pie.

What’s Next for Your Pixel (& More Details on Android Q)

With all the changes and fixes in the June, July and now August update, these phones are stable, working well and ready for Android 10 Q whenever it comes out. And yes, Google can still fix a few issues we’ve seen mentioned in the forums, but for the most part, Pixel phones work great.

However, you can expect the official update for Android Q (Android 10) this month as well. We’re almost certain that the next version of Android will be out at the end of August, which means we’re going to start this monthly update and bug fix process all over again. In closing, note that this August update is only for the Google Pixel lineup. Other phones from Samsung, LG or OnePlus are waiting for updates from manufacturers. Basically, this update is not yet available for you. Well, with the exception of OnePlus, which on July 31 delivered the August patch even faster than Google.
