Gauff, who currently resides in Florida, recently weighed in on his state’s controversial ‘Gay Speaking Act’. This bill recently passed the Florida Senate—titled “Parental Rights in Education,” which bans classroom discussions about sexuality and gender identity at “elementary school levels.” According to this bill, any conversation about LGBTQ+ communities in schools is prohibited and legal action can be taken against them if they violate it.

The bill caused a huge backlash and was dubbed the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Act by activists. Because the bill limits what classrooms can teach about gender identity in elementary schools, activists have criticized the move, claiming it will cause a stigma among LGBTQ people and take away their freedom. Florida native Coco Gauff expressed the same view and opposed the controversial bill. The American said that this bill would limit the conversation around the LGBTQ+ community and people would feel isolated because of such rules.

“I’m against it. I think these conversations are important, and for me, who have friends in the LGBTQ+ community, I can’t imagine not being able to talk about your identity. I feel like it’s a normal thing. Everyone I know knew they were part of this community since they were young, so it’s important that they have these conversations at school.” I think because it should be a safe place to talk about everything.” He said at the pre-tournament press conference in front of Indian Wells.
