I like to keep my data organized. Have a launcher with folders or save files inside folders using notes app with folders. We can easily create folders on our computer. What about cloud services like Google Drive? Does it support folders? And how to use and organize folders in Google Drive? Find the answer in this post.
Google Drive folders are also easy to create and manage. You can create subfolders and also share folders and subfolders with others. You can also sync your folders from Drive to your PC and vice versa.
So, let’s get started on how to use and manage folders in Google Drive on mobile and PC.
1. Create Folder in Google Drive
On the Google Drive website, click the New button on the left. Select Folder from it. Drive’s interface will ask you to name the folder. Assign a relevant name and then add the files to it as shown below.


In the Drive mobile apps for Android and iPhone, tap the add floating icon. Select Folder from it. Next, name the folder.


2. Add Files to Folders in Google Drive
Open the Drive folder you want to add files to. Again, click the New button and select Upload File. Next, navigate to the files you want to install on your computer. You can even drag and drop files directly into the folder.

On mobile, open the required folder and tap the add icon. Select Upload to attach files from your Android or iPhone.


3. Create a Subfolder in Google Drive
To add subfolders inside an existing folder, you need to open the folder and then repeat the steps you did to create the folder. So, click on New inside the folder and choose Folder from web.

Open the folder on Android and iPhone. Next, tap the add icon and select Folder.


4. Create Shared Folder in Google Drive
There is no separate method for creating shared folders. You need to create a regular folder and then share it.
Note: When you share a folder, all files and subfolders in it become visible to the shared person. However, they cannot see your other folders. Similarly, if you share a file within a folder, only that file will be visible.
To share a Google Drive folder on the web, right-click the folder and select Share or Get shareable link. We covered different types of sharing in our special post on Google Drive sharing permissions.

To share the Drive folder on mobile, tap the three-dot icon next to the folder and select Share.

5. Organize Folders by Color
To better organize your folders, you can color-code them using the native option. Doing this makes it easy to distinguish the various folders within Google Drive.
To change the color of a Google Drive folder on the web, right-click the folder and select Change color. Choose the color you want.

On Android and iPhone, tap the three-dot icon for the folder and select Change color from the menu.


6. Search in Folder
You can search the Google Drive web directly within a folder or subfolder. To do this, right-click the folder and select Search in. Then enter your search term in the top search box.

7. Add to Home Screen
If you want to quickly access a Google Drive folder from your phone’s home screen, you can create a shortcut for it. To do this, tap the three-dot icon in the folder and select Add to Home screen.


8. Copy and Move Folder
You can easily move a folder to another folder using the Local Move option. Doing this will also move all the content inside the folder.
To move a Google Drive folder on the web, right-click the folder and select Move To. Next, select the destination folder.

In mobile apps, tap the folder’s three-dot icon and select Move.

Google Drive does not offer a direct way to copy the folder. However, you can do this by making a copy of the files inside the folder. Next, you will need to add them to the new folder. Select the files to create a copy of your files. Right click on them and select Make a copy. Next, create a new folder and move these new files into it.

9. Sync Folders from PC to Drive
With the Google Drive Backup app for Windows and macOS, you can sync your Google Drive folders to your PC and Mac respectively. You can also sync content in folders on your computer with Google Drive. We covered in detail how to use the Backup and Sync app. Check it.

Check Google Drive Storage
Spreadsheets, Docs, Forms, etc. Anything you add to Drive folders takes up storage space, except for documents from Google products such as Your public Google storage is shared between Drive, Google Photos, and Gmail. You can check how much storage it takes up in Drive in our guide.
