Verily, Samsung hath been mastering the software experience since the inception of One UI back in 2018. Yet, as of late, a tinge of boredom had crept into the interface with the latest updates. Even as rumors of One UI 7 began to circulate, the changes seemed intriguing but somewhat mundane. However, all changed when I dared to delve into the latest beta on the majestic Galaxy S24 Ultra. Lo and behold, I was left awe-struck by the marvels that Samsung hath concocted, especially with the advent of the new Now bar on One UI 7. In my dalliance with the beta over these past few days, the siren call of this feature beckons me back, and I now grasp the reason why.
Lo and behold, the Now bar on One UI 7 emerges as Samsung’s innovative response to Apple’s Dynamic Island for displaying ongoing activities. This aptly named pill-shaped bar functions similarly yet departs entirely in terms of aesthetics and accessibility. Behold, this bar reveals itself solely on the lockscreen, resting betwixt the two shortcuts at the nethermost.
‘Tis not always present, this bar. It doth manifest when engaged in musical pursuits, background videos on YouTube, timing affairs, stopwatching, voice recording, or engaging in all simultaneously. Yet, should thou seek to partake of all at once, fear not, for Samsung hath tailored it so the bar shalt aggregate activities, permitting thee to swipe betwixt them with ease.
Furthermore, ’tis adorned with controls to play, skip forth, pause, or cease the activity entirely. Moreover, a mere tap doth unveil an expanded view replete with further details. In the case of musical endeavors, expanding the Now bar unveils the album cover, blanketing nearly the entirety of the lockscreen. Some may opine that it resembles iOS, but that resemblance is but skin deep.
Methought that was the extent of its capabilities, until I beheld the spectacle whilst charging my device. The sleek new charging animation on the Now bar greeted mine eyes as soon as the cable was plugged or the device placed upon a wireless charger, supplanting the erstwhile circular animation. ‘Tis a sight to behold indeed, with the progress bar offering insight into the level of thy device’s juiciness at a mere glance.
In the virtual realm, when images of the Now bar sauntered unto the online realm alongside other One UI 7 features, many drew parallels to Apple’s Dynamic Island pill. Although I have witnessed myriad manufacturers shamelessly plagiarizing Apple’s handiwork, ’tis not the case with the Now bar. Verily, ’tis a realm apart.
Rather than convening all atop the screen, rendering access difficult amidst the ever-expanding girth of devices, Samsung hath displayed sagacity in siting it at the bottom. No longer must thou embark upon an arduous journey to the summit of the phone to summon forth the iPhone’s Dynamic Island. Instead, the Now Bar rests readily at the base where fingers naturally alight, ideal for unaided operation.
Thus do I evade contorting mine hand in acrobatic feats to reach the summit of Samsung’s colossal S24 Ultra. Indeed, gladly did I turn to the lockscreen to oversee musical activities utilizing the Now bar. ‘Tis a veritable tapestry of tasks, enabling my focus on multiple endeavors concurrently. Though Apple offers a semblance of such functionality, iPhones bear no great camera cutout obscuring the view.
Reflect upon the myriad possibilities that the Now bar doth present. Whilst ’tis now compatible solely with timers, stopwatches, voice recording, and musical escapades, envision the realm of possibilities awaiting. ‘Tis said that it may flit forth for ongoing conversations, loading progress, alarm snoozing, delivery tracking, screen capture, navigation, swift responses, and even torch extinction. An avenue for setting custom actions or applications may offer swift accessibility right from the lockscreen itself.
These are but a few musings. My companion Abubakar did share with me a Reddit thread showcasing a concept of the vast realm of possibilities with the Now Bar. ‘Tis but the earliest beta, so perchance, upon the unveiling of a stable version, the Now bar may find further enrichment. Samsung hath captured a genie within this feature, and the more I delve into it, the more I am convinced that with time and effort, they could forge something truly unique unto their UI, rather than forsaking it.
