Facebook Messenger remains a solid choice on the platform, more than a decade after the platform expanded to any individual regardless of college campus membership, especially in the United States, where Facebook’s popularity reigns supreme. Unfortunately, the Facebook Messenger app has developed a bloated reputation, packed with loads of additional capabilities that slow your phone down and add little in terms of real value. Other apps like Line, WeChat, and Google Allo have all been among certain demographics worldwide (with the exception of Allo, which has had trouble developing any type of audience worldwide), but their footprints in the United States are minimal at best.

That really leaves only one option: WhatsApp. While the app hasn’t quite reached the level of popularity in the United States as it has in South America, Europe and Africa, this SMS replacement app – which is funny enough and also owned by Facebook – is simple and easy to use. Use it and it’s packed with all the features you want and none of the ones you want. In many ways, WhatsApp feels like the natural evolution of SMS, complete with read receipts, enhanced group messaging, and online beacons that show when someone was active and last active on the service. All of this makes it a messaging product that feels truly cohesive and advanced, while being streamlined enough at the same time to eliminate ads and unnecessary excessive bloatware.

WhatsApp has been somewhat overlooked in North America, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the best messaging apps on the market today, trusted by thousands of people for their daily communications. It’s a really cool app that has remained great over the years while improving its visual appearance, and the ability to send messages to groups simultaneously on both iOS and Android while keeping the same features we love with things like Facebook Messenger and iMessage. Group chats are an inevitable part of our society today and WhatsApp manages them perfectly. Unfortunately, it can get a little confusing when it comes time to break up a friend group. What is the difference between exiting a group chat and deleting a group chat on WhatsApp? How do you leave a group chat completely and delete one? And is it possible for everyone to delete a group chat or just specific users? How to Organize Group Chats on WhatsApp?

Group chats on WhatsApp are different from chat services seen in apps like Facebook Messenger and iMessage. Unlike the capabilities of these chat apps, which are largely based on the idea that you can communicate with friends and family in private and intimate conversations, WhatsApp is built to be able to chat with up to 256 people at once. This includes the ability to chat with people from all over the world using links and URLs to invite people to chat without having to know their personal phone number and other information about the user.

However, allowing such a large number of people into group chat means you have to include some layout structure. If 256 people could control the fate of a single group chat, the entire product would be inefficient, unpredictable, and downright chaos when trying to chat with other users. That’s why WhatsApp uses group admins in every group chat, no matter how big or small. Group admins are a great idea on behalf of WhatsApp.

Every group chat starts with a single admin. This person is the creator of the group chat, meaning he added the original members to the group. Admins within WhatsApp can add or remove members from a group at any time, making it easy for them to manage discussion and dialogue throughout their WhatsApp group. Groups can have as many admins as members, and each admin is also allowed to assign the title to new members. While making each member of a group an admin is a good idea for smaller groups of three to five members, it is not recommended to allow one hundred members in a group to have an admin power on WhatsApp. Allowing this would risk a general abuse of power from members within the group, especially when conversations begin to escalate to a large population.

Other than the ability to add and kick people into groups, admins have little power over the discourse of a WhatsApp group chat, so you should never feel like the conversation is blocked by adding someone who is there to keep an eye on you. to make sure that conversation and things don’t get out of hand. Apart from the ability of a group admin to essentially act as a bouncer to the chat, they can also send the aforementioned link invitations to users who want to join the chat. On the other hand, any member of a group chat can change the subject and icon of a group chat, mute notifications locally on their device or web browser, and leave a group at any time.

What Does It Mean to Leave a Group Chat Instead of Deleting the Group Chat?

Let’s use an assumption here: you attend a university somewhere in the United States, and in a lecture-based class, you are asked to form groups of four or five to work on an assignment. Once paired, it’s your job to exchange contact information. These are people you don’t know well, and it seems like a hassle to give four different phone numbers. On top of that, only two of the four members have iPhones, which means iMessage is dormant. Instead, one member quickly adds all four people to his phone, then creates a group message within WhatsApp for individual members to discuss plans for the project with each other. This single member is a group admin; everyone else is just a participant in the group chat.

You got an A in this hypothetical class, congratulations!- after project completion there is no reason to keep group chat open on your device. The four of you are not friends outside of class and although you can talk to each other for the rest of the term, now that the project is complete, you really have no reason to stay in touch anymore. In this scenario, let’s say you are only one participant. You are not the student who started a group chat with your peers, but the group chat still takes up space in the WhatsApp threads on your phone. While you may have found the option to leave the group chat on your device, you don’t see a way to actually delete the group chat. Is there a way to delete messages from your phone?

While you can’t delete the group chat, deciding to leave the group chat will effectively do exactly what you want to do from within WhatsApp. When you leave the group chat, you will no longer receive notifications and cannot join the chat. You will still see the chat on the main screen of WhatsApp along with other chat threads you have joined, and you can read the history of the group chat whenever you want. And if you want to remove the group chat from your phone after it exits, you can both archive and delete the group chat by long-pressing the chat on Android or swiping across the thread screen on iOS. This does not delete the existing group chat for other users; instead, it removes the group chat thread locally from your device, either by archiving it to your account or completely deleting it from your account.

So, to bring it back to our hypothetical classroom scenario, if you decide to exit the group chat and delete it from your phone, the other three members can still chat through the app even though you “delete” the chat. It’s pretty similar to how SMS works, except for the option to “exit” a chat and the ability to delete it from your device without reappearing on your phone when the chat becomes active again.

Is It Possible to Permanently Delete a Group Chat?

Yes, but with a catch. To delete a group chat on WhatsApp, you must be the group admin of your chat. While any participant can exit a group chat, only administrators of a group chat can delete the entire group chat. Therefore, if you are a group member of only one chat, you cannot delete the group.

Whether there’s any real benefit to permanently deleting a group chat is up to the admin’s judgment. Using the hypothetical example we used above, you can easily justify deleting a group chat that is no longer active or deleting a chat that no longer has any purpose. After two weeks, if the group chat between you and your former project members has cooled down, the group admin may consider deleting the chat. We have a full article on how to do this, but here’s the simple version: the group admin starts by kicking each member of the group one by one through the header’s settings. This empties the chat one at a time, leaving only the single admin member within the group. In many ways, this can act as a failsafe; A large group with hundreds of members and multiple admins can prevent a rogue admin from destroying the group chat after they start kicking people out of the group.

After the admin removes each member from the group chat, they exit the app, leaving it as an empty chat. After that, the group manager deletes the chat thread from his phone, thus permanently deleting the group chat. Former members in the group chat will still have an archived version of the chat log that was created before they were removed from the group, but generally, the chat will be effectively deleted and rendered obsolete.

All that said, you shouldn’t worry too much about the difference between deleting and exiting a group chat. Basically, whether or not a group message goes on without a specific user is negligible at best, which differs from most casual WhatsApp users as it doesn’t mean much to users outside of large, two-hundred-member group chats. Similarly, all former members of a permanently deleted group chat will still have chat logs from the previous incarnation of the group chat; This means that users who want to remove evidence of a previous chat will still leave traces of those chats behind.
