Microsoft OneDrive is one of the best cloud storage solutions for everyone. It’s available on all platforms, costs less than the competition, and gets the job done. Alongside the OneDrive mobile apps, Microsoft also bundles the desktop version to keep files and documents in sync across all platforms. However, the overall experience is not as smooth as one would like. Sometimes you may encounter sync issues on Mac.
You must have noticed that OneDrive in Windows is a built-in solution. But on the Mac platform, the situation is completely different. There are many factors to consider for successful integration.
If you run into a sync problem with OneDrive on Mac, read on to fix it.
1. Make Sure OneDrive Is Working
When you set up OneDrive for the first time, the service continues to run in the background to sync the latest files and pictures. You can see the application running in the Mac menu bar.
You may have killed the app in the background due to aggressive RAM management or accidentally. Here’s how you can confirm the problem.
Stage 1: Use Command + Space and open Spotlight Search.
Step 2: Type Activity Monitor and open the app.
Stage 3: Select the CPU tab and look for OneDrive in the Process Column.

Step 4: If OneDrive isn’t working, make sure you launch it.
2. Check Your Internet Connection
Although OneDrive lets you use the sync folder when your internet is down, the service won’t sync until you’re back online. You can fix this by turning on your Wi-Fi and making sure it’s connected to the correct router.
The best way to check if your internet is working is to open a web browser and start using it. If you do not have a connection, you will receive a warning instead of the web page you opened. In this case, try restarting your router or contacting your service provider.
3. Restart OneDrive
Sometimes a simple reset of the service can fix critical sync issues for you. Follow the steps below to restart OneDrive.
Stage 1: Find OneDrive in the menu bar.
Step 2: Find Help and Settings and exit the service.

Stage 3: Restart OneDrive and check if the issue persists.
If that didn’t fix the problem, continue reading.
4. Keep Syncing
To avoid excessive background data usage, OneDrive offers the option to pause syncing for up to 24 hours. If you’ve used this option, it’s time to continue syncing by following the steps below.
Stage 1: Find OneDrive in the menu bar.
Step 2: Click on Help and Settings.

Stage 3: Select Resume sync from the menu below.
You can also try turning your Wi-Fi network off and on for Mac.
5. Open OneDrive at login
As mentioned earlier, OneDrive opens automatically at Mac startup time. If it can’t open the app, follow the steps to enable the behavior.
Stage 1: Find OneDrive in the menu bar and tap on it.
Step 2: Go to Help and Settings and open Preferences.

Stage 3: Under Preferences > General > enable login at login.
Alternatively, you can use the Mac settings menu to open OneDrive while signing in.
Stage 1: Tap the little Apple icon in the upper left corner of the menu bar.
Step 2: Open the System Preferences menu.

Stage 3: Go to Users & Groups > Login Items and tap the + icon.
Step 4: Select OneDrive from the Applications menu.
After that, every time you start your Mac, the OneDrive service runs at startup.
6. Buy or Delete OneDrive Storage
OneDrive only comes with 5GB of storage. Filling the space with files, media and documents is pretty easy. If your OneDrive storage consumption is around 5GB of storage, you can purchase more storage or delete irrelevant files to create new ones. You can always subscribe to Microsoft 365 plans that come with 1TB of OneDrive storage.
7. Remove Download Limit Rate
OneDrive allows you to put a download limit rate on Mac. If you used this option in the past and forgot, it’s time to undo it. Follow the steps below.
Stage 1: Find OneDrive in the menu bar and tap on it.
Step 2: Go to Help and Settings and open Preferences.

Stage 3: Under Preferences > Networks and select No limit for downloads.
8. Update macOS
macOS Big Sur brings dozens of minor changes along with a nice UI makeover. That said, Apple isn’t having a good time with the quality of updates for the Mac platform.
OneDrive sync problems can be caused by the buggy update released by Apple. The company usually quickly releases fixes for users.
Open the system preferences menu and update macOS to the latest version.
