My new Apple Watch will be a cellular model. According to rumors, that means I’ll be buying the Apple Watch 6 with LTE when the new model arrives in 2020. I have an Apple Watch with LTE and finally the GPS only model. I plan on getting the cellular model when I upgrade to the Apple Watch 6. Let’s take a look at why I changed my mind on a more connected Apple Watch. The same advice applies if you want to buy any Apple Watch with LTE.
The LTE-enabled Apple Watch lets you leave your phone at home and do a lot with just the watch on your wrist and a pair of Bluetooth headphones. If you’re active or like to leave your phone at home, it might be time to consider the Apple Watch with LTE, too.
The last time I owned an Apple Watch with LTE was the Apple Watch 3, which I’ve since purchased GPS and WiFi models. That was fine, but as I spend more time outside, following the sun to the beach, and working on fitness, I miss the connection. Therefore, I plan to buy the Apple Watch 6 with LTE, even if it means switching to Apple Music later this year.
In 2018 I decided that the Apple Watch with LTE was too expensive and not enough features to justify the upfront and monthly costs. The Apple Watch with LTE is currently $100 more than the WiFi-only option, and the monthly cost varies from carrier to carrier. So it’s still more expensive, but wearing an LTE connection on your wrist has more value than it was a few years ago.
That’s why my new Apple Watch will have LTE.
I’m more active this year and looking for ways to carry less and still have connectivity options if I’m running or swimming. Being able to check the weather, send and receive messages, and ask Siri questions is more valuable to me in 2020 than in 2018. This is the biggest reason why I’m planning to buy the Apple Watch 6 with LTE.
With watchOS 7, Siri can translate 10 languages, dictation is now done on the device, so using Apple Watch to send messages will be faster and more reliable, and Siri Shortcuts on Apple Watch. None of these features are exclusive to the LTE model, but with LTE I will be able to do a lot more on my new Apple Watch.
I’ve been a Spotify user for years and really enjoy the service. I love, too tide HiFi, but ultimately Apple’s monopoly control over music streaming on the Apple Watch is likely to challenge my decision. I just want to be able to go for a run with my Apple Watch and AirPods Pro. The only way to easily do this with a music streaming service is to switch to Apple Music. All in all, I could probably save some money by taking advantage of the Verizon Plan with Apple Music, and it’s easy to switch.
You can store Apple Music offline on your Apple Watch so you don’t need LTE if you can plan ahead. No Apple Watch streaming or offline playback for Spotify or TIDAL at this time.
Apple Watch with LTE also supports streaming podcasts in the Apple Podcasts app; this may be a reason to add LTE the next time you upgrade your Apple Watch. Like Apple Music, you can add them to Apple Watch.
The Apple Watch 6 or Series 6 will likely arrive in September or October alongside the iPhone 12. We expect the price to be the same, which means a premium of $100 for the Apple Watch 6 with LTE. If you’re currently looking for an Apple Watch with LTE, you can choose the Apple Watch Series 3, Series 4, or Series 5.
