Top 4 Useful iOS Shortcuts for Everyday Use

The iOS-enabled iPhone makes email and messaging easy. However, you still have to tap into a few options to get things done. That’s where the Shortcuts app comes in to quickly automate some of these taps and tasks on your iPhone and iPad. It’s almost like using the IFTTT service.

The Shortcuts app helps to streamline your daily processes. Apple has provided many different programs in their galleries and there is the ability to type your Shortcuts as you become more familiar with the app. This guide will show you how to install these new shortcuts and modify them to suit your specific needs.

While starting

Stage 1: Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone. If you uninstalled it, download it again.

Step 2: Open the Shortcuts App and click the Automation button in the bottom center of the screen.

Stage 3: Click the Gallery toggle button in the lower right corner of the screen.

It already has a gallery and a list of shortcuts that you can use and adapt to your personal needs. Here are a few that will make your daily life easier and more efficient. Shortcuts can be found in the search bar at the top of the app or in gallery navigation.

1. Write Your Home ETA

This shortcut will calculate your approximate time of arrival home from your current location and send a message to a recipient of your estimated time of arrival.

Step 2: Enter your home address at the prompts (this can be any address you regularly commute).

Stage 3: Enter to whom you want to send the message; It can be your roommate, partner, parents.

Step 4: After adding the shortcut, you will see a confirmation. Go to the Shortcuts app’s home page by clicking the Shortcuts button in the lower left corner of the screen. You will see your new shortcut in the menu.

Step 5: We’ll double-check that everything in the shortcuts is working smoothly. Open this new Shortcut by clicking ‘…’ (Ellipses) in the right corner of the Home ETA box. This Shortcut does not have access to the current location. Click Allow Access to allow access.

Step 6: Now we will add this shortcut to our home screen. Click on the ‘…’ (Ellipses) icon in the right corner of the app.

From here, we can rename the Shortcut (if you’re sending the text for a non-home arrival time), change whether it shows on the Share Sheet and on your Apple Watch, and turn on location services.

Step 7: Click Add to Home Screen.

Whenever you want to type in the estimated time you will be home, you can click on the new shortcut. You will get a preview of your message and you can change it if you want.

2. When Should I Leave?

If you commute to work during rush hour or have an accident-ridden ride, this shortcut can help make your mornings a little smoother.

Step 2: Fill in your starting location (like home) to your final destination (like your workplace).

Stage 3: Find your new Shortcut in the main menu and open it to tweak a few settings. Scroll down to the History section of your shortcut.

You can set the arrival time (07:00 in the photo above) and how long it will take (5 minutes) to walk from where you parked.

Step 4: Save this Shortcut to your home screen and use it to start your day. A stylish notification appears suggesting the best time to leave the house so you can arrive at your destination on time.

3. Calculate Tip

At the end of the meal and with a full stomach, you may not be in the mentality to do the math. Fortunately, with this Shortcut we can automatically calculate our tip with just a few keystrokes!

Stage 1: Save “Volatile Calculate” from gallery.

Step 2: If you want to adjust percentages, you can open the Shortcut and make edits. If not, save this Shortcut to your home screen.

When you run this Shortcut, iPhone will ask you to enter your dinner bill and choose the tip percentage. After entering the amount and the tip percentage, your phone will calculate the tip and the total bill.

4. Shazam Shortcut

If you like to use the Siri feature to ask what song is playing while you’re out, but tend to forget the name of the song when you get home, this shortcut is for you!

You must have downloaded Shazam on your phone.

Stage 1: You will see the Shazam Shortcut in Startup Shortcuts on the main page of the Shortcuts app. Save this on your home screen.

Step 2: Open shortcuts. Make sure to turn on all supporting features to allow the shortcut to run smoothly.

Stage 3: Run your new Shortcut.

This shortcut will enter the song’s name into your Notes app and see if the song is available on Apple Music. From there, the shortcut saves the song to your Apple Playlist Library. Do you want to disable Apple Music feature?

Step 4: Open your Shazam Shortcut and navigate to the step ‘If Apple Music URL’ and click the X next to it. Click Delete Actions to remove all actions in this queue.

Step 5: We will continue to delete all subsequent actions until there are only certain actions in your Shortcut.

Once these are cleared, your Shortcut will only identify the song playing with Shazam and save the title to your Notes.
