Disruptions occur during the delivery of a product. Mistakes when packaging, ordering or entering your address are no shortage of reasons why a package can turn into an unpleasant surprise. However, the experience of a Reddit user named Edmard is quite extraordinary. If the whole thing strongly resembles a scam, this one seems particularly elaborate.
It all started when Edmard decided to buy an iPhone 15 Pro Max. To avoid being deceived, it occurred to him that it would be a good idea to go directly to the Apple site. Then everything happens normally: He receives an order confirmation via email and the tracking code from the delivery service. But at the reception he immediately realized something was wrong.
He is given an Android smartphone that looks like an iPhone 15 Pro Max
First, he marks the screen protector, which makes him think he’s getting a refurbished iPhone. Later upon firing his suspicions were confirmed. He immediately notices that there is no OLED screen, which normally should be on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. After a few configuration steps it becomes clear: This is an Android smartphone with the iOS interface installed.
What finally convinced him was the existence of strange pre-installed apps like TikTok and Facebook. “This may have convinced my grandfather, but I realized it very quickly.”, He is writing. It is certain that this scam aims to recover Wallet data as well as Apple IDs from Edmard. Luckily he didn’t enter any of this into his smartphone.
This still raises the question of the technique used by scammers. Indeed, without knowing exactly how, the latter managed to “hijack” the user’s order and send him a fake smartphone instead, all within reliable time limits. Apple became aware of the issue and ensured that the issue was investigated.
