PlayStation Portal will unfortunately not be a worthy successor to the PS Vita. There’s good reason why those waiting for a new Sony portable console will still need to be patient. For those who still don’t know; The device presents itself as a simple remote playback device.
In other words, PlayStation Portal will only be used to play games installed on your PS5 via Sony’s Remote Play function and Wi-Fi connection. It will be impossible to use PlayStation Portal for gaming sessions outside the homelack of a 4G modem on the device and especially cloud streaming functions.
PlayStation Portal may offer cloud gaming in the future
However, on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, the official release date of PlayStation Portal, we have just learned some important information about the device. Sony’s Vice President of Platform Experiences, Hideaki Nishino, made an unexpected statement on PlayStation Portal during an interview with the AV Watch site.
According to that, the manufacturer does not exclude the idea of adding streaming functions to the cloud in the near future On PlayStation Portal: “Remote Play and cloud streaming differ only in terms of server locations, so there are no technical obstacles to implementing cloud streaming in PlayStation Portal.” he told the Japanese media.
If we are to believe the Japanese firm’s framework, there is nothing stopping Sony from integrating cloud streaming functions into PlayStation Portal. In fact, we wonder why the manufacturer did not immediately see fit to offer this functionality in the peripheral… This could have made it possible to strengthen its appeal among gamers and It would further justify the €219.99 demanded by the Japanese giant.
For now, PlayStation Portal’s success is off to a rather weak start. Since its price announcement in August 2023, many gamers have found the device too expensive and unappealing as it does not offer cloud streaming or Bluetooth connectivity to use wireless headphones/headphones.
