According to a new report, the iMessage for Android release date could be part of Apple’s WWDC 2016 announcements alongside iOS 10.
iMessage is currently only available on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple computers, but the latest report suggests an Android iMessage app is coming this year.
We’ve already seen Apple provide cross-platform support for the services, with Apple Music for Android providing access to the streaming service, so this has precedent.
Apple also offers an Android app to make it easier to switch from Android to iPhone. Turning on iMessage for Android could make it easier to switch from iPhone to Android, which seems counterintuitive.
Last year, Apple had to deal with iMessage issues when users switched from iPhone to Android, so this could be part of a longer-term solution to customer satisfaction. The issues have affected messages sent to users switching from iPhones to Android, so there are frustrations on both sides.

Citing a source “familiar with the company’s thinking”, the report mentions that this could be tied to Apple’s person-to-person payment system, which is expected this year.
The iMessage system allows users to send each other encrypted secure communications, which can make it easier for Android users to communicate with their iPhone-using friends. It would make sense for a service like this to include location sharing features and other iMessage benefits.
There is no mention of FaceTime for Android or FaceTime Audio for Android in the report.
Apple is allegedly working on a payment system that could allow users to send money to other people using iMessage and Apple Pay. This is another feature that Apple could announce at WWDC 2016.
If that’s all connected, Apple Pay person-to-person payments may not arrive until iOS 10 this year. Assuming it’s all tied together, the iMessage Android release date might not arrive later than September.
