How to Use Safari Tabs on Your iPhone

How to Create Tab Groups

Do you find your tabs constantly getting messy when you use Safari and have multiple pages open at the same time? If so, creating tab groups will help you keep everything in one place.

Creating tab groups is simple. You can make these using pages you’ve already opened, or create groups of tabs from scratch. First, let’s consider how to do this using web pages you have opened before:

Stage 1: In the Safari app, click the icon with two squares at the bottom of your page.

Step 2: On the next page, you will see all your open tabs. If you scroll to the bottom, you will see an option titled “.[number] tabs”; select it.

Stage 3: When the next window appears, hit the option named “New Tab Group”. [number] Tabs.”

Step 4: Your iPhone will ask you to name your new group. Type it in the box and hit Save.

When you create your new tab, you can access it by clicking the two square icons in the bottom right. In the popup you will see a small bar with your tab name.

If you don’t have pages open yet but want to prepare for your future browsing sessions, you can create groups from scratch. To do this:

Stage 1: Select the two squared icon at the bottom of your Safari app.

Step 2: Click on New Empty Tab Group.

Stage 3: Give your tab group a name and hit Save.

After that, you can hit the two square icons and hit the plus sign at the bottom left.

How to Use the Compact Tab Bar

In Safari running iOS 15 and higher, you’ll see a compact tab bar that’s slightly different from previous versions of the app. While many users have reported difficulties using it, it is very simple once you get used to it. Besides entering a website address, you can also use this bar to navigate between tabs and view them all.

If you want to navigate between tabs, you have to go to the bottom bar first.

Once there, swipe left or right to visit your other web pages. Alternatively, you can swipe up to see a summary of the sites you’ve opened.

If you use this setting in tab groups, you will see all the sites you want in that group. Thus, it provides easy transition between pages.

The compact tab bar should be open by default. However, if you turned it off before, follow these steps to enable it:

Stage 1: Go to Settings > Safari.

Step 2: Scroll down to Tabs.

Stage 3: Select Tab Bar.

When you reopen Safari, the changes should have taken effect.

How to Ungroup Tabs

If you later want to remove your tab groups, the process isn’t too difficult. To do this, follow these steps:

Stage 1: Select the two squares in the bottom right in Safari. Alternatively, you can swipe up if you have the compact tab bar enabled.

Step 2: Tap the tab name at the bottom of the next page.

Stage 3: Keep the group you want to remove. Then choose Delete.
