How To Fix iPhone 12 Performance Issues

This iPhone 12 series still fairly new, but these devices are not immune to performance issues.

iPhone 12 owners continue to provide feedback on Apple’s latest iPhones. Most of the feedback is great and if you’re on the hunt for a new device, the devices are definitely worth a look.

We’ve also heard that there are various bugs and issues plaguing iPhone 12 models. Among them are problems with their performance. The current list of iPhone 12 performance issues includes UI lag, freezes, crashes, and random reboots.

If your iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max freezes, freezes, or randomly restarts, you don’t need to contact customer service yet. You have a chance to solve your problems on your own.

This walkthrough will guide you through solutions that have worked for us and others in the past, and help you have a fast and efficient phone on the go.

Restart Your iPhone 12

If your iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max is running iOS 14 or iOS 15, the first thing we recommend is a quick reboot.

Turn off your phone, leave it off for 30 seconds and then turn it back on and see if the issues are resolved. If not, you’ll want to try the solutions below.

Update Your iPhone

Apple will release new iOS 15 software throughout the year. While these updates will likely be limited to security patches, it will also release new iOS 14 software. Don’t expect bug fixes or new features.

Point updates (xxx) almost always focus on fixing bugs, while landmark upgrades (xx) typically offer a mix of new features and bug fixes.

While Apple doesn’t disclose performance fixes in an iOS 15 update’s changelog, new software always has the potential to help (or hurt) your iPhone’s overall performance.

Update Your Apps

Try updating your apps to the latest version.

App developers continue to roll out iOS support updates, which can help stabilize your device’s performance.

Before installing the latest version of an app, be sure to review reviews from other iPhone 12/iOS users. If the reviews are mostly good, you’ll want to download the latest version.

Reset Your Settings

If you are still experiencing performance issues on your phone, try resetting your iPhone 12’s settings. Here’s how you do it in iOS 14:

If you are using iOS 15 on your iPhone 12, you can reset all your settings like this:

This will restore your iPhone 12’s settings to their factory defaults, so make sure you have your Wi-Fi passwords handy. You will need to re-enter them.

Clean Up Your Storage

If you’ve transferred files from your old phone to your new iPhone and have had that old phone for several years, you probably have a lot of clutter in your internal storage.

Getting rid of unused files and apps can help improve your phone’s performance.

If you want to do some cleaning, you’ll want to first check and see how much free space you have on your iPhone. Here’s how to do this:

If you’re getting close to reaching your device’s storage threshold, you’ll want to go back to General and navigate to where it says iPhone Storage. Here you will get a detailed summary of your data.

Apple will make some recommendations based on your device storage usage, but you can manually delete files you no longer need.

Stop Automatic Downloads

Apple’s auto-update feature can be useful, but a constant stream of updates will keep your iPhone 12 running in the background.

If you manually update your apps in the App Store, try disabling Automatic Downloads on your iPhone and see if performance improves.

Go to the Settings app. Once inside, tap on iTunes & App Store. From here you will want to turn off Updates located in the Automatic Downloads section.

You may also want to disable other options.

Disable Widgets

If you are not using widgets on your phone, try disabling some or all of them to see if it helps. Here’s how to do it.

On the home screen of your iPhone 12, swipe right. After that you have two options. You can do:

If you press hard on a widget, a small menu will open. To remove a widget, you’ll want to tap Remove Widget at the top.

If you selected Edit at the bottom, you can tap the minus sign on a wiggling widget to remove it. You can also scroll down and select Customize. This allows you to quickly add or remove Widgets.

We recommend disabling the Widgets you are not using. Note that you can always turn them back on if you don’t notice a change or decide you want to use a particular widget.

Clear Browser Cookies and Data

Clearing your browser’s cookies and data frees up memory space, which can have a positive impact on the performance of your iPhone 12.

If you’re using Apple’s Safari browser, here’s what you need to do:

Tapping this removes your browsing history, cookies, and other data from Safari. The history will also be cleared from all devices signed into your iCloud account. If that’s okay, tap Clear History and Data again.

If you are using Google’s Chrome browser:

You can now choose the ones you want to delete. If you’re noticing heavy lag, you might want to clean everything up and start from scratch.

Stop Using Background Refresh

Apple’s Background App Refresh feature refreshes apps in the background to show you the latest data when you open them on your device. It keeps your phone running in the background, so if you think you don’t need this feature enabled, you may want to turn it off.

Here’s how to disable it:

If you want it to stay open for some apps, leave it open and then go to your app list and manually turn it off for apps you don’t use.

Check Your SIM Card

If your phone is rebooting randomly, try removing your SIM card. You’ll need a paper clip (or something like that) or a SIM eject tool to remove it. The SIM card tray on the iPhone 12 is located on the left side of the device.

If you are no longer facing problems with the removed SIM card, reinsert it and monitor your phone’s performance. If you encounter the problem again, try resetting your iPhone with the SIM card removed and then reinserting the SIM card after the phone restarts.

downgrade

If you’ve recently upgraded to a new iOS version and are having problems, you can try to downgrade your iPhone 12’s software.

You can do this through Finder, iTunes, or iCloud.
