Apple will announce the iPhone 8 and iPhone X today, and we expect to see the iPhone 8 release date on September 22, and the iPhone X release date could be shortly.
There’s a good chance you’ll need to pre-order the new iPhone this week. To do this, you must be eligible for an upgrade. This is no longer based on two-year contracts, but based on payments you make and other terms of your plan.
Check if you are eligible to upgrade to iPhone X or iPhone 8 and how much you owe on your current phone.
If you buy outright, we expect prices for the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X to go from $649 to over $1,000. Most people will upgrade to iPhone 8 or iPhone X with a monthly payment plan. To do this, you need to find out where you stand on your current phone payment plan, if any.
Here’s how to check if you’re eligible for an iPhone 8 or iPhone X upgrade at major carriers and through the Apple Upgrade plan.
verizon
Check your Verizon upgrade eligibility.
The quickest way to see if you’re eligible for a Verizon upgrade is to pick up your phone and call #874. After a few seconds, you will receive a text message from Verizon stating your upgrade eligibility, and possibly a second text message directing you to the My Verizon app to check more information there.
If you are ready to go, “Phone Number is eligible for upgrade today. Ready for a new phone or device? Get the details at: go.vzw.com/myverizon or visit a Verizon Wireless store.”
See how much you have to pay to be eligible for the upgrade.
On some phones, dialing the number will take you directly to the My Verizon app, where you can see your Upgrade eligibility. You can also check the Verizon website. Go to the website, sign in, then click My Devices. If you are not eligible yet, you will see the option to Check Upgrade Options as you can see below. Clicking on it will show you how much you’d have to pay to trade your phone and buy a new one on a payment plan, or how much you’d have to pay to pay for your entire phone.
AT&T
Dial *639# on your AT&T phone and you’ll receive a text message letting you know if you’re eligible for the upgrade. The message we received was “Good News: You are eligible for an upgrade!” It came with a link to the best deals, but you’ll likely be waiting for the iPhone 8 and iPhone X pre-orders to go live.
Check your AT&T upgrade eligibility.
You can also sign in to AT&T to check your upgrade status and see what payments you have to make to stay up to date. Sign in to the AT&T website, then click the three bars to the left of My AT&T and select My Wireless and Upgrade a Device. You’ll be able to upgrade from here, but not until iPhone 8 or iPhone X pre-orders begin.
sprint

Type in Sprint or check your account online.
You can write an upgrade message to 1311 on Sprint and you’ll get a message telling you when you can upgrade. If you’re not on any payment or rental plan, the message is short and sweet. If you’re in one of these, you should plan to go to Sprint, log in, and then check how much you have to pay there to lock the upgrade.
T mobile
Check how much you have to pay for Jump on T-Mobile.
If you have a Jump plan on T-Mobile, you can upgrade to a new iPhone as soon as you pay 50% of your device. You can log into your account and check if you still have to pay anything to get your upgrade. You can’t text or call a number to get an automatic reply, so be sure to check online.
Apple Upgrade Plan
If you’re on the Apple Upgrade plan, you can upgrade to the new iPhone after one year. You need to see when you bought your iPhone. If you purchased it in September last year, you must be eligible for the upgrade. You can check this on the Apple website after the service is back online after the Apple event.
Apple now offers the option to exchange by mail; With this plan, it will make it much easier than last year to pre-order the iPhone X and trade with your old device. During the iPhone 7 launch, many users were disappointed that they had to go to a store and this option was not available online at midnight during pre-orders. You should have made 12 payments, so be prepared to make one more payment before you pre-order the iPhone X.
