Micromax has worked hard to reinvigorate the design of their phones and change the way they look that doesn’t disappoint people when they hold it. Micromax canvas HD is no exception and looks great when the phone is held. The phone has a 5-inch candy bar form factor. The phone has a bulging rear camera that looks nice along with the LEDs. There is a front camera on the top at the front. The volume keys are on the left and the unlock key is on the right. It has a 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB port. The microphone is provided at the bottom. The phone is a dual sim phone.

2. Equipment

The phone is powered by 1.2 GHz Quad core MediaTek MT6589 processor (cortex A7 -soc) with 1GB RAM and powered by 5XT CPU by PowerVR. The quad core processor is not as powerful as Qualcomm’s snapdragon processors, but the advantage of 1.2GHz is that your phone doesn’t get hot very often. When it comes to sensors, there are basic sensors such as light sensor, proximity sensor. The phone has Bluetooth3.0 with a2dp, Wi-Fi b/g/n, GSM 900.1800MHz, the phone supports 3G services, EDGE, GPRS and UMTS. Supports GPS for navigation. Micro USB port 2.0 will allow charging and connection with mass storage. The phone has FM radio and good speakers.

The phone has a 5 inch IPS LCD display with HD resolution of 1280 X 720 pixels which is scratch resistant but not as tough as gorilla glass. The screen is not Full HD but supports HD resolution and watching multimedia content on the phone will be a pleasure. The IPS panel display provides beautiful viewing angles with bright screen visibility even in sunlight. The pixel density of the screen is 294 ppi. It may not look very sharp, but this phablet or phone is fine at the price point at which it was released. The touch screen is capacitive with 5 touch points and the screen supports 16 million colors to enhance the experience.

4. Storage and Memory

Micromax has provided onboard 1GB of RAM allowing you to multitask with ease and play games without any hitches. The phablet or smartphone has 4GB of internal storage (don’t expect a full 4GB as user accessible), but you can expand it up to 32GB via micro SD card.

5. Camera

Micromax A116 Canvas HD has an 8MP rear camera with LED and 4X digital zoom. The front-facing camera is VGA quality with 0.3MP aperture for video calling and chatting. Camera performance is adequate but not comparable to 8MP cameras from other companies like HTC or Samsung.

The phone comes out of the box with android 4.1 jellybean. Micromax provides its own user interface with its own voice command features. The music player supports MP3, AAC, WMA, WAV formats but this is not a problem because apps in Play Store fix this problem. Video player MPEG4 ie mp4, H.263, H.264, WMV formats. Again, there are apps that will replace the Play Store. The browser supports HTML 5 which is fine.

Since the phablet or phone comes with a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM, it is good for multitasking as well as running heavy applications like high-quality video and music apps. The quad-core processor also allows you to watch 1080 pi Full HD with video player apps on Google Play. If you are a heavy gamer, Canvas HD is ideal for you as the phone or phablet is powered by powerful GPU graphics and powered by Quad core processor.

Micromax Canvas HD has a 2100 mAh removable battery with Li-Ion technology.

The 2100 maH battery can squeeze in a day and a half if you do everything with your device, or a day or more in standby due to the jellybean being more efficient. The IPS screen will consume more battery life than any other screen.

9. Price factor and availability

Micromax is aggressively trying everything to dominate the phablet and smartphone market. The Micromax Canvas HD is priced at around INR 15000 or $270.
