Bitmoji App: 5 Things Users Should Know

The Bitmoji app for iPhone, iPad, Android and Chrome lets you create your own personalized emoji avatar and send it to others. Here’s what you need to know about the popular Bitmoji keyboard, Bitmoji on Snapchat, Bitmoji issues and more.

If you’ve recently received text from a friend with an emoji that looks very similar to how it looks, chances are they’re using the Bitmoji app.

If you’re tired of stock emojis and want to create one that looks just like you, Bitmoji is an app you won’t want to miss.

What is Bitmoji?

Bitmoji is a free app that lets you send a personalized avatar to your friends and family on various chat programs.

The app has tons of customization options that let you define your look. When you send your avatar to someone, you can change the look of your hair, beard, eye color, size, eyebrows, even your clothes.

They also include expressions of happiness, fear, optimism (see below), and countless others. Yes, Damn Daniel is included.

If you’re using an iPhone or iPad, you must be using iOS 8 to use the Bitmoji keyboard on your device.

If you’re running something older than that, you can send Bitmojis to people through the Bitmoji app itself.

How to Use Bitmoji

After you download the Bitmoji app, you need to access it via your chat apps (Android) or your keyboard (iOS).

Bitmoji-iOS

The Bitmoji app comes with its own setup instructions, but here’s how to enable it on an iPhone or iPad:

  1. Tap “General” in your device’s Settings.
  2. Tap “Keyboard” then click “Keyboards”
  3. Tap “Add New Keyboard”
  4. Tap “Bitmoji” under “Third-Party Keyboards”
  5. You will be back to your keyboard list. Tap on “Bitmoji” from here
  6. Toggle “Allow Full Access” from Off to On and allow Bitmoji to access your keyboard

Once you have the Bitmoji keyboard alive, you will have quick access to the keyboard via your shortcuts. On iOS, you’ll want to tap the “globe” symbol followed by “ABC” to quickly access the Bitmoji keyboard. You can also hold down the world button and access it from the drop-down menu.

Tap the Bitmoji you want to send and it will copy the image to your clipboard. Tap the message field and select paste. Paste your Bitmoji and hit send. You can also add a message to your Bitmoji if you want.

Bitmoji-Android

If you prefer to use Bitmoji with Google Chrome, you need to download the extension from the Chrome Web Store and activate it.

Bitmoji works with a variety of chat programs, including Google Hangouts, iMessage, Whatsapp, and Facebook Messenger.

How to Use Bitmoji on Snapchat

You can now use Bitmoji with Snapchat.

The latest update to Bitmoji allows you to link your Bitmoji account from Snapchat. When you do this, your Bitmoji avatar will automatically appear on Snapchat. And yes, you can add any Bitmoji you see to a Snap or chat.

To get started, make sure you have the latest version of Snapchat and the latest version of Bitmoji installed on your device. Once you are sure of that, follow these instructions.

  1. Open Snapchat.
  2. Tap the ghost icon at the top of the camera screen.
  3. Tap the gear icon to open your settings.
  4. Tap ‘Bitmoji’.
  5. Tap the “Bitmoji Link” button.
  6. If you’re logged in, you’ll see a screen asking if you want to allow Snapchat to use your existing Bitmoji avatar.

If you want to unlink your Bitmoji from your Snapchat account, you will go to Snapchat settings and select ‘Unlink your Bitmoji’.

Keyboard Privacy

If you install Bitmoji on iOS, it will ask for full access to your keyboard. Although this is a bit inconvenient, it is necessary to use the application.

Developer requests “Full Access permission so we can download your private Bitmoji images from our servers”.

The company also says that “we never read, transmit or store anything you write.”

Theme Packs

The Bitmoji app is free, but there are in-app purchases you can make to customize your avatar.

Bitshop (the little stop icon in the right corner of the app) lets you pay for Theme Packs that bring new emotes for your avatar. Most of them are $0.99 and add six new themes for you to send to your friends.

The developer is constantly adding new free Theme Packs and states that “you will never be charged for a Theme Pack without your consent.”

How to Fix Bitmoji Issues

If you’ve already downloaded the Bitmoji app and are having problems, have a look at these potential fixes for Bitmoji issues.

If you recently installed a Theme Pack from Bitshop and you don’t see it in the app, try this workaround:

  1. Make sure you’re signed in to the Apple ID that made the purchase in Bitshop.
  2. Open the Bitmoji app on your device.
  3. Tap the Settings (looks like a wheel) icon.
  4. Tap Restore Purchases at the bottom.
  5. Return to the Star tab and your new bitmojis should be there.

If you’ve recently installed Bitmoji on a device running iOS 9 but don’t see the keyboard, this fix should help enable it:

  1. First open your Settings and go to General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
  2. From there, tap Bitmoji.
  3. Turn Full Access Off and then On again.
  4. Open the Bitmoji keyboard.
  5. Annoy your friends with silly bitmojis any time of the day.

If the application you want to use is not in the share list of the Bitmoji application, you can save the bitmojis as photos and send them this way. Here’s how to do this:

  1. Go to the app and choose a bitmoji.
  2. Save the Bitmoji to your device’s photo gallery.
  3. Open the chat app you want to use.
  4. Add Bitmoji from photo gallery like a normal photo. (Remember, you’ll probably need to give the app permission to access your photos.)

Bitmoji iOS 10 Issues

If you upgrade to Apple’s new iOS 10 update and your Bitmoji keyboard stops working, there’s a simple fix.

All you have to do is download the latest version of the Bitmoji app. The developer says that the latest update has fixed this issue, hopefully good.

We haven’t had any major issues with Bitmoji since the developer released the latest bug fix update. The latest version comes with several fixes for persistent iOS 10 issues.
