Apple’s iOS 12 update is causing issues for some iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users, and we’re expecting a quick iOS 12.0.
iOS 12 brings many exciting changes to Apple’s mobile operating system. These include performance improvements, Screen Time, and ARKit 2.0. It also brought a collection of performance issues and annoying bugs.
Apple has spent months testing the iOS 12 update, but issues plague the initial release. Some of these issues are brand new, others ported from iOS 11.4.1 and earlier versions of iOS.
During our short time with iOS 12, we didn’t encounter any game-changing bugs, but we did notice some annoying bugs that we wanted Apple to fix.
Apple has confirmed an iOS 12.1 update and the milestone upgrade is currently in beta testing. The company hasn’t announced a release date, and we expect iOS 12.1 to stay in beta until October or November.
iOS 12.1 will most likely come with bug fixes and patches, but we hope Apple brings relief before that. If the date is an indicator, it will be.
Last year iOS 11.0.1 came shortly after the launch of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, and we could see Apple following a similar protocol this time around.
There’s no guarantee that iOS 12.0.1 will be available this week or next, but we’re hopeful. If Apple decides to release a quick bug fix update, here are a few issues we and others will want fixed.
Stuck in Landscape Mode
An issue affecting some of our devices on iOS 11.4.1 is available in the iOS 12 update.
While it doesn’t happen as much as it did in iOS 11, some of our iPhones still get stuck in landscape mode on the home screen and when using certain apps.
If you are not familiar with this problem (it is common), it becomes a problem when you change the screen orientation from landscape to portrait. The screen stays horizontal instead of rotating.
The problem happened several times after typing Messages and using Google Hangouts. We’ve also seen it occur when using Chrome and the YouTube app.
Fortunately, there is a way to manually fix the problem. If your iPhone gets stuck, you need to swipe up from the right side of the device’s screen, not from the bottom. We also had to reboot our devices to get the screen to hang.
Apple may not list a fix in its official changelog, but we hope the next version of iOS will eliminate this issue completely.
Message Issues
Perhaps the most annoying issue we encountered in iOS 12 is a bug inherited from iOS 11.
We are dealing with a Message issue where iMessages do not appear as read on iPhone after reading them on a Mac.
Even our own messages sent to friends and family on a MacBook Pro sometimes pop up as new messages on our iPhones and iPads.
Messages sent on our devices are also occasionally shown as “Undelivered” even if they have been sent.
All of these messages reached the other person successfully, but were tagged as “Not Delivered”.
We’ve been dealing with this issue for months, and we’re hoping a combination of a new iOS 12 update and macOS Mojave will root it out.
Camera problem
Photos sometimes appear in the wrong direction after taking a photo with the Camera app in iOS 12. This has already happened a few times and it means that we had to turn it so that it got inside the photo and there were no sides.
We’ve seen this issue in various versions of iOS 11, so there’s no guarantee that Apple will fix it with the first iOS 12 update. We crossed our fingers though.
Battery Discharge
So these are the iOS 12 bugs that bother us the most. Especially the Messages issue. Here are a few issues that stand out from other iOS 12 issues.
iOS 12 is not supposed to have a negative impact on battery life, but many iPhone users complain of abnormal battery drain after installing iOS 12.

Apple usually doesn’t report battery improvements in iOS change logs, but new software updates usually fix battery drain issues.
We haven’t seen any battery life issues on our devices, but an iOS 12.0.
Wi-Fi, Cellular Data and Bluetooth Issues
We haven’t had any issues with Bluetooth on our iPhones and iPads, but some iOS 12 users are experiencing Bluetooth connectivity issues after installing iOS 12.

Some iPhone users say they can’t connect to their Bluetooth device. others say the Bluetooth connection is completely broken. This is a huge problem if you have an iPhone without a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Fixing Bluetooth issues can be tricky, but there are a few things you should try while you wait for Apple’s next iOS 12 release.
iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max users are experiencing issues with cellular data and Wi-Fi connectivity. Many users are seeing slow speeds and dropped connections.
Our Wi-Fi connection on the iPhone X has increased and decreased, but we’re still not sure if it’s a router issue, an ISP issue, or an iOS 12 issue.
iPhone XS users are hoping that Apple will provide a fix before iOS 12.1 is released, but so far the company has not responded to the complaints.
