Linux Won’t Install on Chromebook? Here’s The Easiest Fix!

The latest Chrome OS 91 update introduced a nasty bug that prevented users from installing Linux on their Chromebooks. Many users are reporting that they encounter the “Chrome OS update required” error when installing Linux even though Chrome OS is on the latest version. Upon investigation, we found that the main culprit was the new DLC service, preventing Chrome OS from downloading the latest Debian Buster build in the Linux container. If you’re getting the “Chrome OS update required” error while installing Linux on your Chromebook, don’t worry. To fix the problem, simply change a Chrome Flag.

1. Open Chrome browser, enter chrome://flags into the address bar and press Enter.

2. Next, search for “Crostini Use DLC” and disable this Chrome flag. Again, you need to disable this flag from the dropdown and not enable it. Alternatively, you can also open chrome://flags/#crostini-use-dlc and disable the flag.

3. In the lower right corner, “Restart” device. Click on it and your Chromebook will reboot instantly.

4. Now go ahead and install linux on your Chromebook. This time, you will not encounter the “Chrome OS update required” error. This much.

This is how you can fix the Linux installation error on your Chromebook. I am on Chrome OS 91 stable channel and still encountered this error.
