Notification Grouping is the right answer to prevent endless alerts from cluttering the entire Notification Center or lock screen. With all alerts organized in neat piles by apps or structure, you can navigate through specific notifications and find the ones you need a little more convenient. watchOS 7 also lets you manage notification grouping on your Apple Watch, so you can choose a preferred way to stack alerts or even disable it if you want the alerts to appear in a traditional way.
Manage Notification Grouping in watchOS
First, let’s find out the difference between Automatic and By App notification grouping so that you can choose the right one according to your needs!
Difference Between Automatic and App Notification Grouping
Just like iOS 14, watchOS groups notifications in two ways: Automatic and By App. Auto mode offers stacks of notifications based on nature such as contacts, time, discussion thread and more, while “by app” mode groups all notifications into a single stack per app. Which notification grouping mode you should choose is entirely up to your preference.
Personally, I like to group notifications for specific apps like expense trackers/personal finance and activity into a single stack per app. It offers the convenience of checking all alerts from an application in a single stack without clutter. It also ensures that I don’t have to look elsewhere to find the desired alerts for the same application.
And for apps like news and reminders, I choose to use auto mode. watchOS uses machine learning to monitor how you interact with alerts and stack notifications for a tailored experience. Depending on your personal taste, you can choose your desired notification grouping style for each app. Let me show you how it works correctly!
Choose Preferred Notification Grouping Style in watchOS
Note that watchOS lets you manage notification grouping by app. So you’ll have to dive into each app to fine-tune the setting.
- start watch app on your paired iPhone.
2. Tap now. my watch tab in the lower left corner of the screen. Next, tap on Notifications.
3. Next, find application (supports notification grouping) in question.
4. Next, tap . Notification Grouping.
5. Finally three options choose from:
- Closed: Select to turn off Notification Grouping for this particular app.
- Automatically: Select to allow watchOS to stack notifications for this app depending on nature. (By default, this mode is selected.)
- By Application: Select this option to allow watchOS to group all notifications into a single stack.
Choose the option you want and you’re ready to go!
Easily Manage Notification Grouping on watchOS
This is how you can manage notification grouping on your Apple Watch. Now that you know how each alert grouping mode works, choose the preferred option based on your needs. It would be better if watchOS provides the option to choose the system-wide notification grouping style.
Hopefully, Apple brings it to watchOS 8. Anyway, watchOS 7 seems to tick almost all the boxes, thanks to some pretty useful features like sleep tracking, battery health, and hand washing detection.
