You can screen record on your Mac by following a few easy steps.
Apple’s macOS software comes with a screen recording feature that is extremely useful when you want to send someone a tutorial, a bug you’ve encountered in your current iOS version, or even a highlight from an app or game.
The screen recording controls on the Mac are not front and center, so many of you, especially those new to macOS, may not know how to find or use them.
So if you’ve migrated from a Windows computer or a Mac to a new Mac, Chromebook, or if you forgot how to view recording on Mac, we will show you how. When you do it several times, the process should be bound to memory.
Here’s how to view the Mac log on macOS Big Sur, macOS Catalina, or macOS Mojave.
How to Make a Recording Screen on Mac?
You don’t need to download an app for screen recording on Mac. You can record your screen using the macOS Screenshot toolbar or macOS QuickTime Player. First, we will show you how to view the recording using the Screenshot toolbar.
To open the Screenshot toolbar on your Mac, follow these steps:
- Press the Shift, Command and 5 keys together.
- The Screenshot toolbar opens at the bottom of your Mac’s screen.
- The three leftmost icons are for screenshots. Ignore these. You will use the icons in the middle of the toolbar. They have a shaded circle within another circle.
- One option lets you record the entire screen, while the other lets you record a selected portion of your screen.
- Choose the option you want, if you want to record a selected part of your screen, you have to drag to select the area you want and then click on Save.
- To stop the recording, you have to click the Stop Recording button in the same toolbar.
You can use the macOS Screenshot toolbar to record your screen.
After you stop recording, you will see a thumbnail of your video appear in the lower right corner of your screen. If you want to save the video quickly, swipe the thumbnail to the right. Or you can’t do anything and it will be saved automatically.
You can also click on the thumbnail to open the recording so you can edit it. You can also drag the thumbnail to other locations, such as the Trash or an email.
Control-clicking the thumbnail will bring up additional options.
In the screenshot above, you’ll see an Options dropdown next to the Save button. This allows you to change your recording settings before taking your shot.
You can change where your clips are automatically saved, set a timer, and choose whether you want to use the Mac’s built-in microphone.
You can also choose whether you want to see a floating thumbnail of your clip, save your selections to the tool next time, and choose whether to show a black circle around your marker when you click on record.
You can also use Apple’s QuickTime player to record your Mac’s screen. Here’s how to do this:
- Open QuickTime Player from your Applications folder.
- Click File Now.
- Select New Screen Recording from the menu bar.
- You will then see the same Screenshot toolbar as in the instructions above or the Screen Recording window if you are using an older Mac software. If you are using the Screen Recording window, Check out Apple’s guide.
It is important to note that some apps may not allow you to use screen recording due to copyright or privacy issues.
