How to Get Pixel 2’s Portrait Mode on Other Devices

Update: I tried Camera NX Mod on various devices. I found the app works perfectly on OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, Nokia 8, and the original Pixel and Pixel XL. However, the mod did not work on Nexus 5X, Redmi Note 3, Mi A1, Samsung Galaxy S8, Moto G4, OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T.

While Google’s flagship offerings for 2017, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, have had a lot of issues since day one, there’s no denying the fact that the phones have the best smartphone cameras we’ve ever seen. It’s rare that the entire tech world agrees on one thing, but the Google Pixel 2 achieved this rare feat by being crowned the best smartphone camera of 2017 by every famous tech reviewer out there.

One of the biggest features of the Google Pixel 2 camera is that the smartphone can take incredible portrait shots using a single camera when most flagships fail even with a dual camera setup. While Pixel 2s offers flawless camera hardware, The success of the portrait mode feature is undeniably due to Google’s software prowess.. Since portrait mode is primarily a software-activated feature, there was always the possibility of porting it to other devices, no matter how thin.

Well, today we are happy to announce that Senior XDA developer Charles Chow has finally found a way to enable portrait mode of the Google Pixel 2 on other Google devices, including the original Pixels, Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. According to a blog post on his site website ChromloopCamera NX V7.3, a mod for Google Camera, can unlock portrait mode feature on other Android devices.

note: Although the Google Camera mode that brings Portrait Mode to other devices is said to be only available for the Nexus 5X, 6P and original, we tried it and it worked on our OnePlus 3 as well, so you can try it on other devices.

  1. Download Camera NX V7.3 mod by clicking the link. Open the APK on your smartphone and press the install button To install the mod on your device, also grant all necessary permissions as required by the app.

2. Now, launch Camera NX app on your phone and tap the hamburger menu button in the top left corner. Here, tap the “Portrait” button.

We tested the app on our Nexus 5X however, it found that it was not working properly on our device at the time of this article’s publication. The app kept crashing and stopped responding to any input. However, the same camera mode for the OnePlus 3/3T worked just fine. This means that it is possible that we encounter a problem on our own handset. I’ve attached the sample photo I took with the mod. Camera NX on my OnePlus 3.
