A PDF file is not interactive, so it’s not possible to extract an image or fragment like in a Word document or PowerPoint. However, there are easy solutions to get there. In this tutorial we will give you three simple manipulations To extract an image from PDF. If you are not good with computers, rest assured that these methods can be done by anyone.
Before we start, know that all of these manipulations are performed in Windows 10 (and also work in Windows 11). But some are also available on Mac.
Use the windows screenshot tool:
Windows 10 offers several methods to simply take a screenshot. You can take a look at the different manipulations in this particular tutorial, but we’ll just stick with the simplest:
- Open your PDF and navigate to where the image you are interested in is.
- Open screenshot tool (via the Windows search bar at the bottom left of your taskbar).
- In this tool, click new
- Select the part of the PDF you want to save
- Save your picture
Note that this method works for a PDF, but only the screen capture tool works on anything that is displayed in front of your eyes. Therefore, you can use it on web pages, various documents and even applications.
Using LibreOffice:
LibreOffice is a free software suite that can roughly be compared to Microsoft’s Office suite. It allows you to easily recover an image from PDF:
- Open your PDF with: LibreOffice Base (using the context menu, right-clicking on the icon and clicking Open With)
- If you can’t find it in the list, click Choose another app and select LibreOffice
- document opens
- You will be able to save all the images in the document independently by right-clicking on them.
It’s a very simple method, but it has the disadvantage of causing you to download something you don’t necessarily want.
Use a third-party site:
It is also possible to go through specialized sites to extract images from a PDF. An extremely simple method, probably the simplest method in this tutorial. It has the advantage of being completely online and therefore does not require you to download a special tool to your computer.
- Go to the site ILovePDF
- then click PDF to JPG
- click Select the PDF file.
- When done, choose one of the two options on the right. It is possible to extract all pages to be converted to standalone JPGs as is, or just take images of the original file.
- Wait a few seconds for the conversion to complete.
- Download your file to your computer and open the zipper.
This method has the advantage of being fast and getting all the images at once. Useful if you want to get everything in one PDF.
There are of course other methods to extract an image from a PDF, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Photoshop (paid) or PDF Converter. In reality, they all yield the same result: you have the image you want outside of the original file.
