“Mortal Kombat 1” is among the main highlights of the Summer Game Fest, a live video game event organized and presented by games journalist Geoff Keighley, with the first gameplays revealing an impressive visual evolution.
With elaborate scenarios and improved realism, the new game does not use Unreal Engine 5, as confirmed by Warner to Voxel during the event in Los Angeles, United States.
According to NetherRealm, “Mortal Kombat 1” is developed with a custom version of Unreal Engine 4, the previous edition of Epic Games’ renowned graphics engine.
While the company hasn’t explained its reasons for avoiding using the latest software, this isn’t a new practice.
The new game is not a continuation of the franchise
“Mortal Kombat 11,” released in 2019, also did not use Unreal Engine 4. At that time, NetherRealm opted for a modified version of Unreal Engine 3 to improve the fighting game’s graphics.
One possible justification for adopting the custom Unreal Engine 4 in the development of “Mortal Kombat 1” could be optimization.
Despite requiring 100 GB of space to install, NetherRealm’s new game won’t be that demanding in terms of PC requirements. In addition, it will be released for the Nintendo Switch.

The 4K gameplay footage of “Mortal Kombat 1” demonstrates that, even without the use of Epic Games’ latest solution, Warner’s modified version of Unreal Engine 4 provides impressive graphics.
On social media, the game has attracted attention due to the updated look of the iconic characters and the scenarios full of elements and details.
Media outlets are already releasing 4K gameplays of “Mortal Kombat 1”, showing not only the game’s visual quality, but also the Kameo Fighters system, the return of the Fatal Blow and the Fatalities.
