Remember the Mega Drive? It now has a portable version that runs cartridges

A new feature announced last Tuesday (9) promises to shake up the gaming scene. Hyperkin revealed its newest release, the Mega 95, which is nothing more than a portable console which reproduces original Sega Genesis or Mega Drive cartridges.

The device has a five-inch screen that switches between 4:3 and 16:9 modes, and a battery capable of lasting up to 10 hours on charge. The device will certainly play with players’ nostalgia.

The prototype released is a version of Hyperkin’s MegaRetroN HD console, launched in 2018.

To play Sega Genesis, Master System, Game Gear and SG-1000 games, the new device uses a hardware emulation with the quality of an FPGA-based system.

The company did not give great details about the product, but it is already known that it will also make a USB-C dock available to connect the Mega 95 to TVs and monitors in general.

Data about the Mega 95

The official release date and price of the Mega 95 have not yet been announced. To give you an idea, the brand’s other portable device that features Super NES emulation is on sale today for US$119.99, that is, around R$600.

It is believed that the new console could arrive in Brazil at a more affordable price than that charged for versions of the Nintendo Switchfor example, which today reach R$1,300.

Other than that, it should compete with the Analogue Pocket, a control that can play Game Boy and GBA cartridges, in addition to emulating Super Nintendo games.

Sega consoles throughout history

Sega has released several consoles over time. The first was the Sega Genesis, in 1988, known in Brazil as mega drive. One of the aspects that marked it was the introduction of the Yamaha YM2612 graphics processor.

There was also the launch of the Sega CD, which worked as a peripheral for the Genesis and allowed games on CD-ROM. It was the beginning of a new era in the industry.

Then came the Sega Dreamcast, launched in 1998. It innovated by including a modem for online games, something that didn’t exist until then. The device was discontinued in 2001.
