ALERT! Risk of new diseases and epidemics in the world is high, says UN

The collective trauma caused by the coronavirus pandemic Covid-19 has not yet been understood, and warnings of possible new pandemics have already begun to emerge.

On Wednesday (27/12), the United Nations Organization (UN) reported that there is a high risk of epidemics and new infectious diseases in the world if responsible leaders and governments do not adopt effective prevention measures.

In a tone of appeal, the UN exposed the situation in light of International Epidemic Preparedness Day. In the statement, she also mentioned that the world could face severe and serious effects on both health and the economy.

“They threaten to overwhelm already overstretched health systems, disrupt global supply chains and cause disproportionate devastation to the livelihoods of people, including women and children, and the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries,” says the warning issued by the UN.

Possible solutions

In the same appeal, the UN also suggests some possible solutions or strategies to mitigate the impact of future epidemics.

“There is an urgent need for robust and resilient health systems, capable of reaching the most vulnerable,” he highlighted.

Furthermore, in the Organization’s understanding, there is today a great need for “awareness raising, exchange of information, scientific knowledge and best practices”, all of this combined with “quality education and awareness programs”.

The future scenario is frightening, but there is still time to act. The UN states that possible future epidemics “may exceed those that occurred in the past, in terms of intensity and severity”. More complicated than covid-19? Yes.

Only in Brazil, the disease caused by the new coronavirus killed more than 708 thousand people so far. Worldwide, almost 7 million deaths were recorded, while 695.8 million people contracted the disease.
