This rumor started with a headline article on Wololo, the site specializing in game consoles, on January 5, 2023. This is very bad for machine operation as it prevents the device from cooling properly.
Can the PS5 be placed vertically without risk? There is a definite answer
The article was based on the words of a YouTube video posted by TheCod3r channel in September 2022. In the latter, TheCod3r noticed that the coolant on some PS5s was leaking and some of their customers placed it upright. He does not conclude that this is the cause of the problem.. Wololo misinterpreted some of TheCod3r’s comments and made a causal link between the thermal paste leak and the vertical position of the console. He has since corrected his mistake and made an official mea culpa.
If you notice cooling paste leaking into your console, it’s probably not because it’s vertical. the issue raised TheCod3r’s video only concerns 5% to 10% of PS5s taken into his workshop. This type of failure is therefore too rare to generalize.
