Destiny 2 guide for new players and returning Guardians 1

Destiny 2 guide for new players and returning Guardians

Destiny 2 is a massive multiplayer FPS with seemingly endless loot to collect and use in the most challenging events, from challenging Raids and Dungeons to competitive Crucible multiplayer. However, with so many weapons and armor pieces to collect, loads of Subclass building options, and plenty of space magic jargon to wrap your head around, Destiny 2 isn’t exactly a beginner-friendly game. Whether you’re a first-time New Light player or a returning player trying to meet again, this Destiny 2 guide will help.

Classes and Subclasses

If you’re a new player, the first thing you’ll do when starting the game will be to choose one of the Destiny 2 Classes for your character – the Guardian role in the Destiny universe that determines their abilities. You can be a tough Titan, an agile Hunter, or a mage Mage, each with their own unique Super abilities and more.

Once you’ve chosen your Class and created your characters, you’ll gain access to three freely replaceable Subclasses – more Subclasses can be unlocked by playing the campaigns of certain expansions. You can also unlock new powers known as Elements for your Subclasses and exchange them for Fragments to create different and powerful structures for various events, such as our Destiny 2 Solar builds.

Tips

With a fairly straightforward tutorial and new content arriving quite often with major annual expansions and regular seasons, Destiny 2 is a pretty creepy game and can be hard to get into. We hope our Destiny 2 tips can help you understand the basics and a few things the game doesn’t explain particularly well, from weapon stats to how armor works.

Weekly reset

One of the most important things to watch out for in the game Destiny is the 2-week reset. Every Tuesday, many of the game’s difficulties reset so you can redo them all for even more loot over the next week. Other events see rotations and changes each week bringing new challenges and keeping everything fresh. Check out our guide to see the full list of resets each week.

light fall

Destiny 2 Lightfall is the next major expansion for the game, adding a new campaign, a fifth Subclass type for each Class, and a new destination in the form of Neptune’s pristine, hi-tech capital Neomuna. The Guardians will have to face the Shadow Legion and ally with the noble Cloud Strider warriors to prevent Neomuna from falling. Along with a new Raid, new enemies and of course loads of new loot, Lightfall will be huge.

Best Exotic weapons and armors

Destiny 2 has a fairly standard loot rarity system where different colors represent the quality of different gear pieces – yellow represents the highest rarity, Exotic. Along with a good Subclass build, you’ll also need the best collection of Destiny 2 Exotics to get your Guardian ready for any event – plus too much Use our guide to see which ones you should prioritize. Here’s how the full gear rarity scale works:

  • Strange (Yellow) = The rarest and (usually) best gear in the game. You can only have one Exotic weapon and armor piece at a time.
  • Legendary (Purple) = Powerful gear, which will be the majority of your equipped items.
  • Rare (Blue) = Medium gear, which is sufficient when leveling up.
  • Unusual (Green) = Weak gear, used only for early levels, if any.
  • Widespread (White) = Weak starting gear that you can quickly forget.

Heroic public events

Knowing how to activate and complete Destiny 2 Heroic Public Events will really help you while on patrol. Every Public Event in Destiny 2 can be Heroized by completing some sort of secret mission – some of which you may do by accident, but you really need to be careful with others. When an event is made Hero, complete the event for increased rewards and massive Glimmer payouts.

pot

The Crucible is Destiny 2’s answer to arena-based PvP, where you can face off against a team of other Guardians in goal-based modes. This is a very different change of pace from any other PvE activity, so you might want some Destiny 2 Crucible tips to help you out. If you’re after something more competitive in PvP, also read about the Destiny 2 Competitive Rankings for the Competitive playlist.

Crucible also includes regular events in the form of weekly Trials of Osiris events that start on Friday and Iron Banner events that only appear a few times during the season and last all week. Trials of Osiris represents the pinnacle of minor Crucible matches and pits two teams of three Guardians against each other in an elimination mode. Get a hot streak and you’ll be rewarded generously, and you can take a trip to the Lighthouse for even better loot. Similarly, Iron Banner is for larger teams and only includes chaotic 6v6 modes. You’ll need to complete the Destiny 2 Iron Banner challenges to get the best loot.

Gambit

Gambit is a unique Destiny 2 mod that combines PvE with some crazy PvP. In short, you’ll race against another team to defeat the enemies, deposit their dropped Motes into your Bank, and then defeat the final boss. Teams compete in separate arenas, but one player can occasionally invade the other team, causing chaos. Check out our Destiny 2 Gambit tips to learn about some good strategies to ensure victory.

Season 19.

Seraph’s Season 2 of Destiny is currently underway, with the Guardians battling against Xivu Arath’s Wrathborn armies and attempting to reactivate the Warmind artificial intelligence and former defender of the solar system, Rasputin. In the Heist Battlegrounds missions, you’ll infiltrate derelict Seraph’s Sanctuaries, search subbrain data for Rasputin’s restoration, and eliminate the Wrathborn threat. Learn more about Heists, Operations, a new Exotic mission, and all the loot you can get in our Season of the Seraph guide.

Season 18

Destiny 2 Season of Plunder introduced pirate activities in the form of Ketchcrash and Expeditions as the Guardians battled pirate teams of Elixni enemies to reclaim the ancient remnants of great power. Although no longer this season, you can continue to play all activities until Lightfall begins to follow the story and get any loot suitable for a loot.
