‘Candy Crush Saga’ reaches billion-dollar revenue, confirms developer

King recently announced that its famous game, “candy Crush Saga“, reached an incredible revenue of more than US$20 billion throughout its existence.

Taking into account that the game was initially released in 2012, this equates to almost US$2 billion in revenue every year since its debut on the market!

To celebrate this impressive milestone, King revealed that it will soon release up to 15,000 new levels for dedicated players.

‘Candy Crush Saga’ breaks record in revenue

These numbers reveal why King is the real standout in Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. This acquisition allows the technology giant to establish itself as a leader in the competitive mobile market, a task that would otherwise be challenging.

The journey of “Candy Crush Saga” began when the game was originally published on a website. It later migrated to Facebook before finding its definitive form on mobile devices, where it has garnered more than 5 billion downloads.

This title played a fundamental role in popularizing the model freemium of games, in which access is free, but players have the option to make purchases within the game.

Tjodolf Sommestad, president of King, highlighted that “Candy Crush Saga” and “Farm Heroes Saga” proved that mobile games can have lasting appeal.

He stated that it demonstrates to himself and the industry that it is possible to revive old games and keep them relevant for a decade or more, setting records even after ten years.

King’s business model proves to be successful

“Candy Crush” has been the most profitable series on the US App Store for six consecutive years, which exemplifies how King’s business model has proven successful. Furthermore, Sommestad explained that the company is always working on new games, but that the challenge is great and it takes a long time to launch a new title nowadays.

“Candy Crush” took just a few months to develop, but has continued to be updated and improved over ten years. King was acquired by Activision Blizzard in 2016 and is now in the process of being acquired by Microsoftcementing its place as one of the leading names in the mobile gaming industry.
