The world of video game consoles is constantly evolving, with each new generation bringing the promise of more stunning graphics, more immersive gameplay, and increasingly engaging entertainment experiences.
At the center of this battle are two industry giants: Sony, with its PlayStationand Microsoft, with its Xbox series. Recently, data revealed an interesting scenario: while Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) is outpacing the sales pace of its predecessor, the PS4, the Xbox is facing declines in its sales.

A survey conducted by Ampere Analysis, in February, brought to light a notable PS5 lead over the competition, represented by Microsoft’s Xbox Series S/X. With a difference of 12 million units sold in favor of Sony, the PS5 has clearly captured the market in terms of total sales.
The PlayStation 5, in particular, has achieved impressive milestones when compared to its previous iterations. In terms of unit sales to date, it has outsold the PS4 by 5% and the PS3 by a whopping 87%. On the other hand, the Xbox Series S/X is 10% behind the Xbox One but managed to outsell the Xbox 360 by 6%.
A proud moment for Sony and its CEO Jim Ryan came in early August when they announced that the PS5 had reached the milestone of 40 million units sold globally. This is especially notable considering that the console only launched to the public in November 2020.
While Sony celebrates its victories, Microsoft faces some realities. During the trial against the US Federal Trade Commission, Phil Spencer, head of the division XboxI learned that Microsoft lost the battle of the current generation of consoles to Sony.
However, the gaming industry is fluid and dynamic. The PS5 has gained momentum over the past year, especially with increased supply starting in July 2022. Experts at GameIndustry predict that the PlayStation 5 will maintain its leadership in the hardware market until at least 2025.
