Recent reports indicate that YouTube has started to: Skip video playback entirely when it detects that an ad blocker is activated. This new development seems to be the latest step taken by YouTube in its fight against ad-blocking software and extensions. The platform’s monetization relies heavily on advertising revenue; Therefore, it discussed the methods users use to skip ads.
YouTube’s first major push consisted of shutting down the YouTube Vanced app in 2022, which was popular with third parties and allowed ad-free viewing. In 2023, YouTube began testing direct blocking of ad blocker extensions, preventing any active video from playing. Late last year, the platform tried a softer approach by slowing down video loading times for ad blocker users. But today, YouTube seems to have taken an even stricter stance: If you block ads, you can’t watch videos.
YouTube turns the screw on ad blockers once again
Numerous user reports on Reddit and other online forums describe videos that instantly skip to the end when an ad blocker is activated. The only way to play videos normally is to disable or pause the ad blocker extension.
It’s clear that YouTube is tired of ad blockers, but users are already finding workarounds to get around this latest hurdle. Some claim that extensions like uBlock Origin still manage to work properly, while others use add-ons that automatically speed up ads so they play and complete quickly.
There is also a solution that works for now: using a virtual private network (VPN) and setting the location to Albania. Since Google’s advertising platform does not yet support the Albanian language, users can watch videos ad-free this way on both mobile and desktop devices. Of course, these are probably temporary solutions until YouTube inevitably finds a way to plug the holes.
