A mysterious device appeared last week Google TV StreamerIt was filed with the FCC. However, the latter did not appear in the regular Google account. Instead, it appeared in a filing with Quanta Computer, which is known for making Google’s Pixelbook, Pixel Slate, and Pixelbook Go. It has the model name GRS6B, which follows Google’s naming convention.
9to5Google later revealed the design, which looks like a small box, but now we know a bit more about its spec sheet. According to the FCC filing, this “wireless device” was tested with: Ethernet and USB cables as well as HDMI connection to TVThis suggests that the Google TV Streamer could come equipped with USB-C and Ethernet ports, which is a significant upgrade over previous models.
On the wireless front, the device shouldn’t disappoint. It comes equipped with Bluetooth, dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and, interestingly, Thread radio. This latest addition could be a game-changer for smart home enthusiasts, as it allows direct communication with compatible devices. For example, you can control your smart devices with voice commands, Google Assistant or Gemini.
While some complain about the lack of UWB for the Tap to Cast function, everything looks promising. If these specifications prove to be true, Google appears to be leveraging the ‘boxy’ shape to deliver a more feature-rich experience more than the “dongle” type Chromecast.
Speculation about the device’s internals is rife, with some hoping for an upgrade to the Amlogic S905X4 chip, an improvement over the X3 chip in the Chromecast 4K. Increased storage and RAM are also on many wish lists, as that’s often one of the main criticisms of current dongles.
