‘Star Trek’ franchise nominated for Eisner Award for the first time

The franchise “Star Trek” was launched in 1966 and, the following year, made its comic book debut. Now, almost 60 years after its first edition, the “Star Trek” comics have finally been nominated for an Eisner Award, the biggest award in the world of comics!

IDW Publishing’s Star Trek #400 was nominated for Best One-Shot, while “Star Trek” was nominated for Best New Series. The results of the Eisner Award 2023 nominations will be announced during San Diego Comic-Con, which is scheduled for July.

A difficult journey

The first comic in the “Star Trek” franchise was published by Gold Key in 1967. The first editions became notable for their lack of fidelity to the base material. Since then, the right to reproduce comics has changed publishers several times, and even Marvel and DC have held the rights to the franchise on different occasions.

Until 2007, the franchise license came into the hands of IDW Publishing, which is in charge of several interesting editions of Trek Comics. In June last year, IDW published a commemorative edition of the franchise with “Star Trek #400”.

This unique publication highlighted several episodes that celebrate the history of Star Trek, such as the story written by Wil Wheaton. And with the award, IDW’s commitment to “Star Trek Comics” is finally being recognized.

Uncertain future of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise in theaters

For now, “Star Trek” remains firm and strong in the comics. But what happened to the film franchise? The last film released was “Star Trek: Without Borders” in 2016 and, since then, we have not heard anything new about the story.

For a while, the expectation was that Matt Shakman, who directed WandaVision, would continue the project. But Shakman decided to remain with Marvel Studios and is heading the production of the “Fantastic Four” film. At the time, a representative for Paramount Pictures stated that:

“Matt Shakman is an incredibly talented filmmaker, and we regret that the timing has not aligned to direct our next Star Trek film.

We are grateful for their many contributions, and we are excited about the creative vision of this next chapter and look forward to bringing it to audiences around the world.”

Before Shakman’s departure, the release of the fourth film in the “Star Trek” franchise was scheduled for December this year, but now it has been removed from the calendar.
