Transformation in style
Recently, Eiichiro Odathe brilliant mind behind this epic universe, shed light on the reason behind the stylistic transformation of the crew’s lovable doctor.
In a lively conversation with Gosho Aoyama, creator of the ‘Detective Conan’ series, Oda confessed that it was the anime that inspired him to revamp Chopper.
“After hearing Chopper’s voice in the anime, I decided to turn him into a mascot,” admitted the artist.
Although he was always averse to the idea of creating mascots, he couldn’t resist the charming voice of Ikue Otani, who brings Chopper to life.

Chopper, the crew’s lovable doctor in ‘One Piece‘, had its initial aesthetic less “chibi” and closer to a miniature reindeer.
However, as the anime progressed, creator Eiichiro Oda decided to give the character a makeover to bring him in line with the charming voice of Ikue Otani, who voiced him.
Such transformation was not just an aesthetic choice, but a response to the voice that became emblematic for Chopper, reflecting on the mango and defining the character’s current look.
Oda’s decision highlights how character voices can influence the artistic direction of a work.
While fan reactions to the stylistic change are mixed, Chopper appears to be pleased with his current appearance, and the expectation now is whether the World Government will recognize his value by increasing the reward for his courage and adorableness.
Meanwhile, ‘One Piece,’ which began serialization in 1997, continues to delight audiences worldwide with the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates, receiving acclaim for its plot, art, humor and characterization.
