Mônica’s birth has deep, personal roots. By looking at his own daughter, Mônica Sousa, Mauricio found inspiration to create a character that, decades later, remains relevant and loved by several generations. The relationship between father and daughter transcended the family sphere, becoming part of the collective imagination of millions of Brazilians.

The character’s transformations over time reflect the evolution of the artistic medium itself. If initially Monica She had more robust features, with thicker locks and an emphasis on her prominent teeth, the modernization of art and the advent of 3D animations allowed her to acquire more delicate and contemporary contours.

The ability to adapt to social changes is one of the factors in its continued success. A notable change was Mauricio’s decision to change a characteristic that has become synonymous with Mônica: she no longer uses her rabbit to resolve conflicts. This evolution reflects an understanding that some past behaviors do not align with the current context.

Her presence in comic books gained strength in 1970, when “Mônica e Sua Turma” was released, further solidifying her influence. Today, “Turma da Mônica” continues to be present, with an astonishing annual printing of more than 12 million copies.

The character’s saga expanded beyond the pages of comic books. In 2019, the “Turma da Mônica” universe made the leap to the cinema with “Turma da Mônica: Laços”, a live-action production. Furthermore, in 1993, São Paulo residents were presented with “Parque da Mônica” at Shopping Eldorado.

The future looks bright for Mônica. Mauricio de Sousa revealed plans to introduce adult and elderly versions of the character, showing that she is always ready to reinvent herself.
