It’s been more than 10 years since “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” premiered. However, fans of the franchise still wonder what the truth is behind the mysterious scar on the face of the character Anakin Skywalker, played by actor Hayden Christensen.
One thing we can be sure of: this scar must have appeared between “Episode II – Attack of the Clones”, when the character fought Count Dooku, and “Episode III”, in which Obi-Wan Kenobi’s student ended up on the dark side of the force.
However, in neither production did we see images of how Anakin suffered a facial injury. The answer, in fact, lies in the comics.
The Truth About Anakin’s Scar
The explanation behind how Anakin’s facial scar actually came about is in the comic book “Dark Horse Star Wars: Republic # 71” (2004), written by John Ostrander, Jan Duursema, Dan Parsons, Michael David Thomas and Brad Anderson.
If we look at the cover of the publication, the character already appears with the mark. In its plot, we can see that Asajj Ventress intimidated Anakin Skywalker to assassinate Padmé Amidala and then ended up injuring his face.
The wound was a symbol of his aptitude for the dark side. This explains the mystery behind the mark. Anakin’s scar was also seen in the animated series “Clone Wars,” but it has not yet become canon, so we don’t have an official reason.
However, George Lucas, still on the set of “Revenge of the Sith”, reported that Anakin’s character slipped in the bathtub, as a joke.
“I just put it there. You have to explain how it got there. I think Anakin slipped in the bathtub, but of course he won’t tell anyone.”George joked.
