During Google I/O in 2019, the Mountain View giant WearOS, the operating system for connected watches. Name of one of the innovations introduced tile, which you might call Tile in Molière. Thanks to this, Google brought a system for customizing the interface and embellishing it with Wear OS.personalized information. Find the official video presentation of Tiles at the end of this article.
These tiles appear as custom screens. You swipe left or right to move from one tile to the next. Until the summer of 2020, Wear OS has set a limit on the number of viewable tiles: 5. Last September, Google removed this limitimplies that there may be more to use. Because until now app developers can’t take advantage of Tiles: only google allowed.
Soon, Tiles will finally…be useful
But that should change soon. Indeed, Google has made a change Android Open Source Project. Especially in the part dedicated to Wear OS. A new entry confirms the upcoming arrival of an API dedicated to Tiles (an interface between the application and the operating system). This way all applications will be able to integrate a Tile. The goal is simple: Greatly expand the usefulness of tiles. It is not yet clear when Google will allow developers to link to it. The next Google I/O might be the right opportunity.
There are several environments for connected hours. For example, we know Tizen from Samsung, which you found on the Galaxy Watch 3, which was released in August 2020. And we know Huawei’s proprietary system that powers the latest Watch GT2 Pro or Honor GS Pro. But only WatchOS at Apple and Wear OS at Google can be considered modern operating systems where apps can enrich the experience just as they do on PCs and smartphones. And we can’t wait to finally see a proposition in the Android camp that can take iOS from its strong point: richness of use. Opening the tiles will of course be a big step.
