Oculus VR: Facebook hacks to crawl users with targeted ads

Facebook is adding a host of new social features to its Oculus headsets. Thus, it became possible to chat and send messages using the headset to engage in multi-user experiences, all with Facebook accounts – whereas the point is before it goes through a separate Oculus account. However, according to information received by Gizmodo, these changes mean that Facebook will collect a lot of personal data. To better target users with ads.

Among the data collected will be “relevant content” of “Oculus activity”, such as the apps you use, according to Facebook. The data will be used to recommend you Oculus events and apps. Still, Facebook states that 3D mapping of your interior (used by most advanced headsets to create a virtual environment) will be stored locally and will not be used for advertising purposes.

However, that prospect is only half as appealing to users, especially since Oculus VR headsets aren’t particularly cheap. Facebook regularly reveals itself in a sometimes scandalous way where user data is managed. However, not connecting your Oculus account to your Facebook account will still be possible at the expense of many features of the headset. In a statement to UploadVR, Facebook explains that the point of all this is: “to help people build their virtual community”.

And to add that we can always “Choose whether you want to automatically add your Facebook friends to your Oculus friends” and “You will always be in control of the information you share on your Facebook profile or timeline, either by giving permission to share or updating your settings”.
